The word bionics is made up of the terms biology and technics, which means engineering in this context. The approach of combining biology and engineering is often also called biomimetics in English. The basic principle of biomimetics is learning from nature. The idea on bionics/biomimetics is to understand the principles behind nature´s constructions and to transfer them in to technical systems and devices.
One major application of biomimetics is the field of biomaterials. Spider silk, for example, is both light and flexible and three times stronger than steel. Such material properties are of interest for various technical fibers. In robotics animal models such as Geckos are used as inspiration for the development of climbing robots.
Biomimetics is a cross-sectional discipline in which engineering and biological competences are required. This is directly reflected in the course of studies. After the first semester a specialization into material sciences or biomechatronics takes place.
Modules include for example:
Bio-inspired materials and devices are of increasing interest in many fields of practical applications. The wide-ranging fields of activity and possible jobs include:
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Application process for a study-program without limited admission.
After the Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences received your application, you will receive a letter of admission, if your application fulfils all the necessary requirements. This letter will inform you about all the information necessary for your enrolment.
If you are interested in a study program without limited admission you only need to apply for the one you prefer most. If you are eligible to study in Germany, you will be admitted to the study program of your choice, so you do not need to indicate alternative preferences.
Application process for a study-program with limited availability
After we have received your application, we will verify whether or not your application fits the formal and educational requirements. In case the number of applications exceeds availability, there will be a selection procedure based on the grade point average of the applicants.
After the selection procedure is finished, you will receive a letter of admission, or, in case you were not selected, a letter of rejection.
In case you have received a letter of rejection for a study program with limited admission, there is still a chance to be selected in an additional selection-round in case an already admitted applicant rejects or withdraws his/her application from the procedure. You participate in additional selection-round if you applied before July 15th 2011.
If you are interested in a study program with limited admission you can apply for a maximum of three of these programs and one with unlimited admission. This way, in case you are not selected for a study program with limited admission, you can still be sure to be admitted to a study program with unlimited admission (provided you are eligible to study in Germany).
Enrolment
After admission you must still enrol to become a student of the University of Applied Sciences of Rhine-Waal.
Enrolment is allowed only in person after you arrive in Germany. After making an appointment with the International Office, please bring the following documents:
In order to enroll, you will also need a German health insurance, which we will help you to obtain. Costs for health insurance for students are between € 60,- and € 70,- per month.
