This programme gives a deep understanding of the principles and methods of modern physics, at a level appropriate for a professional physicist. A large fraction of the programme involves supervised original research within a research group of the Physics Department.

The programme is an ideal solution for students who plan a career in research, both at Universities and Research Labs, and in industrial R&D Centres. High School teaching is a further open option.

This program is structured in a first part in which basic subjects of modern physics and mathematics for physics are taught at an advanced level, followed by advanced lectures in the areas of research and activity of our Physics Department.

A large fraction of the second year of this route goes into an individual supervised research project, which can be carried out either in the University labs or in Research Centers or in private enterprises. Projects can be chosen in several areas of physics, such as:

  • Astrophysics and Space Physics,
  • Medical Physics,
  • Nuclear and Subnuclear Physics,
  • Solid State Physics and Technology
  • Theoretical Physics.

Part of the research project can also be carried out at major international laboratories, with which the Department has standing collaborations, such as

  • CERN, Geneva (Suisse)
  • SLAC, Stanford (USA)
  • Fermilab, Chicago, IL (USA)
  • DESY, Hamburg (Germany)
  • ESFR, Grenoble (France)
  • GSI, Darmstadt (Germany)

Contents

The Master Degree in Physics is normally obtained in two years of study, equivalent to 120 ECTS credits.

Core Courses

  • Mathematical Methods of Physics
  • Quantum Mechanics
  • Advanced Electromagnetism
  • Scattering Theory
  • Elements of Subnuclear Physics
  • Solid State Physics

Optional Courses

Six additional courses must be taken; at least four must courses be taken from the list below, while two more courses (equivalent to 12 ECTS credits) can be freely selected from all courses offered by the University:

  • High Energy Physics Laboratory
  • Physics of Complex Systems and Laboratory
  • Relativity
  • Electron Microscopy: theory and applications
  • Semiconductor Physics Laboratory
  • Measures and Observation of Celestial X and Gamma Rays
  • Sensors: Physics and technology
  • Applications of Quantum Field Theory
  • Elements of Quantum Field Theory
  • Physics of Critical Phenomena
  • Magnetic Properties of Matter and Laboratory
  • Surface Physics and Nanostructures
  • Fenomenology of strong interactions
  • Nuclear and Subnuclear Astrophysics
  • Nuclear physics
  • Phenomenology of electroweak interactions
  • Physical cosmology
  • High energy astrophysics
  • Medical Physics Laboratory
  • Radioactivity and dosimetry
  • Medical Physics

Each student must submit his/her study plan to a comittee that will assess it, making sure that it builds up a coherent teaching path and that it complies with some formal requirements.

Original research project

For the preparation of his/her thesis, each student starts an independent activity involving research and critical overview of an advanced topic, choosing the most appropriate methods and techniques. The selection of the thesis topic and the research activity will be performed in collaboration and under the supervision of a tutor, chosen by the student. Typically, thesis work will take a major fraction of the second year of the Programme.

Each student will present the results of his research project -- for which a referee will be appointed -- at a final exam session, where the M.Sc. degree will be awarded.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
