Location of Masaryk University

The Faculty of Science (ScF) was founded in 1919 with the first students to begin studies in autumn 1920. It resumed the traditions started, in Brno, by Johann Gregor Mendel (1822 – 1884), the world genetics genius. During the years of its existence, the faculty has brought up a number of prominent personalities in botany, zoology, chemistry, geography and geology, physics or mathematics. Therefore, ScF is profiling high significance also today offering university education closely linked to basic and applied research in the branches of science, such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology or Earth sciences.

The Faculty of Science has registered several scientific discoveries of world importance. Faculty’s priority is support to oriented research that best stimulates the harmonic development of individual natural sciences. Certain portion of research capacity streams to non-oriented and non-specific research interlinked, in terms of courses, with primarily doctoral studies. Faculty’s principal research and development effort issues from the long-term trends of each of the major branches – biology, physics, Earth sciences, chemistry and biochemistry, mathematics.

Research in chemistry includes investigation of compound chemical and physical properties, structural analysis, organic and inorganic synthesis, environmental chemistry, computer-aided chemical processes modelling; in biochemistry structures relations and biomolecule functions and roles in metabolism or enzymology. Mathematic disciplines orient to investigating functional differential equations and mathematic statistics models and to algebra and geometry mathematic structures, including applications to informatics and physics.

Master two years study programme Chemistry prepares university educated specialists, who have view of every areas of chemistry, it means anorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry and biochemistry. During their studies they are specialized to closer area, where they will get best theoretical and practical knowledges. Teaching branch prepares grammar school teachers.

The specialised master’s studies graduates may find positions in, besides school system, basic and applied research at universities, departmental research institutes or Czech Academy of Sciences, in industry and in private companies. The best of the master’s studies graduates may continue studying doctoral degree programmes of either on-site mode or combined with distance study mode.

Accreditation

Masaryk University is a public university-type institution of higher education offering:

* accredited degree programmes at the Bachelor’s, Master’s and doctoral levels in on-site, combined and distance modes of study;
* advanced (“rigorozní”) state examinations for graduates of Master’s degree programmes holding the title of “magistr” (Mgr.);
* lifelong education programmes.

An accredited degree programme provides a higher education that concludes with a state examination and the awarding of a degree and accompanying title (the most common being Bc., Mgr., Ing. and Ph.D.). There are three types (levels) of accredited degree programmes, Bachelor’s, Master’s and doctoral, following after one another in that order. In accordance with the Higher Education Act, Master’s programmes that do not follow a Bachelor’s programme may be accredited and offered, though only on an exceptional basis.

Accredited degree programmes always include one or more fields of study. Afield of study is a coherent academic discipline or branch of knowledge. The field of study is delimited by a set of courses and conditions for the creation of a study plan. Fields of study may be further divided into specializations in specific areas (usually on the basis of the student’s taking a certain block of courses).
