This programme is designed to provide experience of appropriate research skills, coupled with knowledge of the broader theoretical context of contemporary interdisciplinary research. It equips you either for further research study or for a career in the development and evaluation of cognitive, computational and/or neuroscientific models.
Teaching and Learning
In addition to lectures, seminars and student-led discussions, you undertake two research placements and a substantial research project. The research topics and techniques, chosen from a wide range, determine the title of the degree conferred. The research project is usually linked to current research within the University, but may also be linked to other academic or commercial institutions.
Employability
At the end of the programme you are equipped either for further research study or for a career in the development and evaluation of cognitive, computational and/or neuroscientific models.
Course structure
This programme is fully modular, and consists of 180 credits, where 10 credits equates to 100 hours of student effort.
Full-time students must complete the taught modules along with the two research placements, in the first two terms. The 60 credit project is completed in the third term and summer vacation.
The recommendation for part-time students is that the taught modules and the first placement is completed in the first year of study, and the second placement and research project in the second year of study.
Students must complete the following modular components:
* Design and Analysis 1 (Basic Statistics)
* Design and Analysis 2 (Further Quantitative and Qualitative Research Methods)
* Computing (two modules from: Matlab Programming; Web Programming; An introduction to Formal Modelling; Introduction to Evolutionary Computing; Introduction to Neural Computation)
* Transferable Skills
* Foundation/Psychological Issues
* Research Placement 1 and 2
* Research Dissertation
