This new master's degree course will provide individuals who already have a relevant bachelor's degree the opportunity to undertake a mental health nursing course leading to registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council at master's level.

Mental health nursing requires a high level of skill and sensitivity. Our course is based on the principle that all people have physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs and are therefore unique and dynamic individuals. The course aims to develop you to become a skilled, sensitive, confident and responsive mental health nurse. A key part of this course is to develop your skills in therapeutic communication and your understanding of the uniqueness of individuals and the ways in which people experience mental health problems.

The core mental health modules focus on the investigation of psychological development and mental health problems and the outcomes of these for individuals, families and the wider society. They also allow you to develop the clinical competence, knowledge and skills you will need to practise effectively and with confidence when you graduate.

Throughout the course, you will benefit from an interprofessional approach to learning in which some modules will be shared with other health and social care students. This type of learning will help to prepare you for work in the current health care environment.

The course will be taught alongside the well-established and highly-regarded BA Mental Health Nursing course offered by Oxford Brookes University.

Working at master's level, you will focus on developing a knowledge base in mental health nursing, which is evidence-based and strongly underpinned by research.

During Year 1, you will undertake a Graduate Diploma and then progress onto the master's route for Years 2 and 3. You may be able to enter directly into Year 2 by providing evidence of prior experience (APEL) or if you have a degree in a health/nursing/science related subject. If you wish to study part-time, you can complete the course over a maximum duration of seven years, undertaking the Graduate Diploma over two years and the master's route over five years.

You will develop an in-depth knowledge and understanding of mental health nursing. This will be informed by scholarship and research as well as critical awareness of current issues/development in the field. You will acquire specific skills, knowledge and competence in your chosen field and more broadly will be enquiry focused, reflective, innovative, confident and self-aware.

You will complete a master’s level research project involving primary data collection; a critical review of the literature, or other scholarly output.

No professional group in health and social care works in isolation. Oxford Brookes teaches a very wide range of pre-qualification courses and foundation courses including health and social care, nursing, midwifery, occupational therapy, operating department practice, osteopathy, paramedic emergency care, physiotherapy and social work. This gives all our courses a strong multiprofessional focus, and you will have many opportunities to share your learning with students from these other health and social care professions. This is a key component of your learning as it is essential to develop your teamwork skills and your understanding of the other roles you will encounter in practice.

Graduates of the course will contribute significantly to high-quality client care; the continued development of patient-centred care/therapy, and theory-practice integration.

Upon successful completion of the MA in Mental Health Nursing, you will be able to:

* Deliver high-quality essential care to all.
* Deliver complex care to service users in their field of practice.
* Act to safeguard the public and be responsible and accountable for safe, person-centred, evidence-based nursing practice.
* Act with professionalism and integrity and work within agreed professional, ethical and legal frameworks and processes to maintain and improve standards.
* Practice in a compassionate, respectful way, maintaining dignity and wellbeing and communicating effectively.
* Act on your understanding of how people’s lifestyles, environments and the location of care delivery influence their health and wellbeing.
* Seek out every opportunity to promote health and prevent illness.
* Work in partnership with other health and social care professionals and agencies, service users, carers and families ensuring that decisions about care are shared.
* Use leadership skills to supervise and manage others and contribute to planning, designing, delivering and improving future services.
