Location of University of Birmingham

This programme is designed to provide both experience of appropriate research skills and knowledge of the techniques currently used in psychological research. It equips you either for further research study or for careers in the development and evaluation of psychologically relevant models in the workplace.

Teaching and Learning
The syllabus includes training in:

* Quantitative and qualitative research methods
* Computer use for academic purposes
* The history and philosophy of psychological science and the critical review of current research methods in psychology
* Presenting information in written, oral, poster and web-based formats
* The professional skills needed for research (such as applying for ethical approval for research projects, exploiting research findings and applying for research funds)

In addition to lectures, seminars and student-led discussions, you undertake research placements and a substantial research project, which is usually linked to current research within the University, but may also be linked to other psychology departments or relevant institutions in the Midlands

Employability
At the end of the programme you are equipped either for further research study or for careers in the development and evaluation of psychologically relevant models in the workplace.

Course structure
This programme is fully modular, and consists of 180 credits, where 10 credits equates to 100 hours of student effort.

Full-time students must complete the taught modules along with the two research placements, in the first two terms. The 60 credit project is completed in the third term and summer vacation.

The recommendation for part-time students is that the taught modules and the first placement is completed in the first year of study, and the second placement and research project in the second year of study.

Students must complete the following modular components:

* Design and Analysis 1 (Basic Statistics)
* Design and Analysis 2 (Further Quantitative and Qualitative Research Methods)
* Computer Use for Academic Purposes
* Communication Skills
* Professional Skills
* Foundation/Psychological Issues
* Research Placement 1 and 2
* Research Dissertation

IELTS

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

* Normally a good first degree in Psychology or a related discipline, but other qualifications are welcomed and will be considered on an individual basis.
* IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any band.
* TOEFL 580 Paper- based test / 237 Computer-based test.
