The programme is aimed at experienced practitioners, whether currently in the field or between missions, who wish to improve their understanding and competencies, develop new skills and reflect on their practices.
It is open to those with an undergraduate degree in any relevant discipline, and substantial and proven professional experience in the field of humanitarian action, or to those with no previous degree but extensive experience in humanitarian action or related fields.
It aims also to help highly professional workers in other fields to start a professional retraining in the field of humanitarian action.
Why Brookes?
This programme is based on the expertise developed at Oxford Brookes University in the CENDEP (Centre for Development and Emergency Practice) which has been running successful pedagogic and research programmes in the field of humanitarian action for the last 20 years.
Expert practitioners are involved in developing materials, teaching and tutoring students. Lectures will be delivered by a mixed team of academic experts and practitioners associated with Oxford Brookes as well as field experts for specific topics.
The programme aims to enhance knowledge of and develop practical competences in:
* the understanding of specific contexts of humanitarian actions, particularly violent, turbulent or conflict environments as well as the urban and built environments, and their impacts on the nature of humanitarian responses
* a range of theories, concepts and analysis in order to investigate specific issues related to the different dimensions and challenges of humanitarian actions
* the use of existing context mapping tools, impact assessment techniques and project cycle management
* action research methods and self reflective approaches to humanitarian action in order to reflect on practices and to develop specific tools related to specific contexts and crises.
