The course is aimed at middle leaders in schools (heads of department, key stage coordinators, pastoral managers). It provides an overview of up-to-date research and educational theory to inform the process of leadership and management. It also offers opportunities for the practical application of theory in a school setting.

This course consists of two modules:
* Leading and Managing People (single module)
* Leading and Managing Change (double module)
Content includes:
* key issues in leadership and management: vision and philosophy of education; school improvement and effectiveness; team leadership; managing meetings; recruitment and selection; motivating staff; managing diversity and inclusion; managing conflict
* strategies for research and school based investigations: organisational structures and culture; strategic planning; continuing professional development; learning organisations; monitoring and evaluation; impact assessment; managing change; action research
* analysis of professional development needs and progress
* skills for academic study.
