The promotion of health is a central feature of World Health Organization (WHO) and international health and social care policy. It is widely acknowledged that health is influenced by a range of factors, including socio-economic conditions (e.g. poverty, social exclusion, unemployment and poor housing), disempowerment, life stressors and individual health-related behaviour. Students on the MSc in Health Promotion will gain knowledge and skills in behaviour change, strategic intervention and individual and collective empowerment, sustainable communities and the concomitant socio-political foundations of practice.
This course is for those wishing to pursue a career in health promotion, health improvement/development and public health, community outreach, the third and voluntary sector. It will also inform and develop the practice of public health nurses (health visitors), school nurses, community nurses, midwives, social workers and social care professionals and teachers.
