Our course aims to make your postgraduate experience both challenging and rewarding, by working closely with industry to ensure that it is relevant to your career in mobile telecommunications.

You will take a variety of taught modules and complete a relevant project under the direction of one of our Department's academic staff. The modules aim to give you a thorough grounding in the underlying techniques of modern wireless communications systems.

In addition, the course will:

* enable you to demonstrate a systematic understanding of knowledge and a critical awareness of current problems relating to the field of study of mobile telecommunication and its deployment in an organisation
* teach you to carry out the high-level design of secure mobile networking applications
* prepare you to assess, plan for, and use appropriate network development tools in the deployment of efficient enterprise-wide mobile networks
* enable you to define the goals, parameters and methodology of a research and development activity related to mobile networks serving information systems, and implement and evaluate this activity
* provide you with a thorough knowledge of modern mobile technologies, preparing you for a challenging, state-of-the-art career in the most rapidly growing area of telecommunications world-wide.

On successful completion of this course you will be able to:

* demonstrate an in-depth understanding of network protocols and mobile policies within a network environment
* devise strategies to analyse, evaluate and optimise network performance
* evaluate the tools and techniques required to provide full and secure access to mobile networks
* identify the legislation relevant to mobile operations and understand the implications of non-compliance
* demonstrate an awareness of current research and developments within the discipline which you may then evaluate and critique
* recognise your obligations to function in a professional, moral and ethical way
* synthesize novel solutions to mobile networks design from a knowledge of current tools, methodologies and strategies
* critically survey current and recent practice in the networking field, identifying examples of best practice and generalising from them
* demonstrate the ability to manage a project through its life cycle
* define the goals, parameters and methodology of a research and development activity.

Assessment
For the Advanced Mobile Systems and Wireless Networks modules, you will undertake course work and examinations respectively. The rest of modules will be assessed on course work only.

Requirements

An honours degree (2:2 or above) in a Computing/IT subject; no work experience is required. If this qualification requirement is not met, an applicant may be accepted with an honours degree (2:2 or above) in any other subject if it is combined with relevant professional work experience.
