This two-year programme is designed to prepare its graduates for challenging human rights careers in international and non-governmental organisations and public administration. It will also provide the essential background for advanced human rights law research. Successful completion of this two-year full-time programme results in the award of a Master of Social Sciences (M. Soc. Sc.) degree.
The programme was launched in 2006 at Åbo Akademi University, the only Swedish-language university in Finland, which since 1985 hosts a dynamic and increasingly international human rights institute. Throughout its existence, the Institute has accepted nothing less than the level of excellence what comes to teaching and researching human rights.
The programme consists of courses and seminars offered to small or medium-size groups of 15-30 students. Each participant will have a doctoral candidate as his or her tutor. The Institute has intense co-operation with various Nordic, European and other human rights centres and institutes, as well as various bodies of the United Nations, Council of Europe and European Union.
Besides offering the new master´s programme, the Institute coordinates a national Doctoral School and a Nordic School in Human Rights Research, runs several academic research projects and participates in European and international networks.
The programme consists of the following modules:
(a) Compulsory human rights law courses (85 credits), including a research seminar and a Master´s thesis in international human rights law; (b) compulsory language studies, and: (c) optional courses, which may include courses offered by the three universities in Turku/Åbo within Turku Law School as well as courses offered by Nordic and international partner universities.
The Programme Director is Ms. Catarina Krause, Deputy Director of the Institute for Human Rights.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
