The International Development degree trains you to apply economic principles to the problems of international development. It offers great flexibility and breadth of choice in module options in the areas of trade and development, natural resources, agricultural and environmental policy.


Contents

Our teaching is informed by the research and scholarship of teaching staff, and is aimed at motivating you to achieve your full potential. All MSc students take a module in Research Methods, which provides practical skills and knowledge for MSc-level research. Students have widely differing backgrounds in mathematics, so the first week of all our Master's programmes is given over to compulsory intensive teaching in mathematics.

Course content

* Core modules in Growth and Development; Political Economy of Public Policy.
* Research methods
* Five optional modules
* Dissertation of 10-12,000 words on an approved topic

Assessment

Assessment methods vary across modules but include take-home coursework essays and problem exercises, computer-based assessment and examinations in May. Students who satisfactorily pass the taught element of the degree progress to the final dissertation of 10-12,000 words.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Requirements

A good first degree (minimum 2.1 or equivalent) in a relevant subject with a background in mathematics/ststistics/quantitative methods.

English language qualificationsAll students from non-English speaking countries must show evidence of competence in an English language test at an appropriate level. Minimum standard IELTS = 6.5, incl 6.0 in reading and writing; TOEFL = 600, incl 4 in written English; internet-based TOEFL 90, incl 20 in reading and writing; Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English C; Cambridge Advanced Certificate in English B.
