The programme totals 120 ECTS credits:
* 2 obligatory common courses, total 15 ECTS credits
* 3 or 4 courses, total 45 or 60 ECTS
* the master´s thesis, 45 or 60 ECTS credits
The programme starts with two compulsory common courses introducing literary theory and language- and communication theory.
Specialisation
Students may choose literary or linguistic specialisation.
Students who choose to write a literary master´s thesis must take at least 2 literary courses. Students who choose to write a linguistic master´s thesis must take at least 2 linguistic courses.
Upon completion of the programme graduates will have acquired
* knowledge of English literature and language seen from a cultural and communicative perspective
* skills in literary, linguistic and cultural analysis
* oral and written language proficiency
* knowledge of scholarly methods and ability to develop an independent, critical attitude
Through working with the master´s thesis students acquire experience in carrying out an independent piece of scholarly work, based on the theory and issues addressed in the programme.

Teaching methods
The language of instruction is English. Teaching takes place in seminars with oral presentations and student-led discussions, and in the form of tutorials.
Written language skills are trained through seminar work, compulsory supervised essays as well as the master´s thesis.
Oral language skills are continuously trained through seminar participation.
Assessment methods
Each of the common courses are assessed with a 4-hour written examination or a home examination. Each of the other courses are assessed either with a 4-hour written examination, a home-examination or an assignment. Information will be given at least two months before the examination date.
Prerequisites: A compulsory supervised essay and its oral presentation must have obtained a Pass.
In some courses an oral presentation must be assessed as a Pass.
A final oral examination is arranged after the master's thesis has been successfully completed.

Requirements for continuing in the study programme
All courses from the first year of the programme must be successfully completed before a student may start on the master´s thesis. All courses of the programme must be successfully completed prior to assessment of the master´s thesis.

Occupational profiles of graduates and access to further studies
The programme provides a basis for teaching English language and literature or working with English in a research capacity or within the field of culture, publishing, media, advertising, translation, the Foreign Service and tourism.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take test* a BA with English specialisation of at least 80 credits, of which a minimum of 20 credits must be from level 2 courses, or
* a completed Cand. Mag. degree comprising an English advanced programme (level 2)
Students must have obtained the grade C from the specialization in the bachelor's programme (80 ECTS credits), or the average grade of 2.7 for mellomfag, in order to embark on the master´s programme in English.
