The Master´s programme in Asian Studies at Lund University is a popular programme and the largest Master`s programme in Asian Studies in Northern Europe. Our students appreciate the truly international milieu with fellow students from a great number of nations and teachers who are established experts on Asia in different disciplines in the social sciences.
The aim of this interdisciplinary programme is to provide our students with advanced knowledge about contemporary issues in Asia. Students gain expertise on contemporary Asian societies and are able to specialise, based on the regional, thematic and disciplinary focus they choose. Most of our students carry out fieldwork in an Asian country of their choice. The students have the option of taking a course at one of our partner universities in China, Japan, Malaysia or India.
As a student on this programme you will:
* learn to analyse complex issues related to social, cultural, political and economic developments in Asia, and acquire the capacity to analyse their causes and interrelations, and to propose possible solutions, as well as identify future trends and developments
* gain the ability to work in an interdisciplinary setting and in a multicultural international environment
* learn to plan and use appropriate methods, undertake advanced tasks within predetermined time frames and so contribute to the formation of knowledge and evaluation
* gain the skills required for work in research, government agencies or employment in some other qualified capacity
* be able to demonstrate knowledge about scientific communication channels and be able to monitor the knowledge development within the field of Asian Studies.
Career prospects:
The programme prepares students for doctoral studies in a social science subject with a focus on Asia, or work as policy makers, trainers or practitioners in government agencies, private firms and NGOs. Earning a Master of Science in Asian Studies is an important step towards a career in international services, teaching, research or business, or doctoral studies.
The first semester of the programme begins with a course introducing you to Asian studies and the main challenges and theoretical concepts used in area studies and interdisciplinary studies. This is followed by thematic and region-specific courses discussing the major social, economic and political issues in the respective areas.
The second semester consists of one region specific course and a course in research methods.
The third semester consists of optional courses that will deepen your understanding of various aspects of Asian societies and prepare you for your thesis work.
The optional courses at the Centre include courses on the economy, international relations, gender, human rights, development, media and popular culture, religion and politics, discourse analysis and environmental issues. The optional courses (chosen after obtaining the approval of the programme coordinator) will enable you to tailor the programme to suit your particular interests. During the end of the third semester you can chose to take a fieldwork course either at one our partner universities in Asia or here in Lund.
During the fourth and last semester you will complete the programme with a written thesis, which will provide the opportunity to demonstrate mastery of theories, methods and analysis of empirical data in the field of Asian studies.
