You will meet and study together with students from 13 different fields of specialisation. As a Master´s student, you will have the possibility of receiving funding for a stay abroad to conduct research on your Master´s thesis through grants available from the Birgit Rausing Language Programme.
Students aiming for a Master´s degree with a specialisation in English linguistics will meet a research community with a long and successful history that has made significant contributions in the fields of modern corpus linguistics, cognitive semantics, generative syntax and second-language learning. The Master s programme provides a solid foundation in core areas like grammar, semantics/pragmatics, the history of the English language and language variation. In addition, students take elective courses from a selection of courses within the field of linguistics.
Career prospectsWith a Master´s degree in Language and Linguistics, you are attractive for employers looking for a highly qualified individual with specialised knowledge in communication and language. An international MA in Language and Linguistics also provides you with the academic background you need in order to apply for doctoral studies in languages and linguistics.
The Master of Arts in Language and Linguistics offers 13 specialisations. The many specialisations help to provide a broad selection of advanced courses in languages and in linguistics. As the programme offers many optional elements, students can choose freely between courses and design a programme to suit their interests.
There are several different types of courses:
Compulsory courses for all specialisations include the introductory course The Philosophy of Science for Linguists and the concluding Master's thesis. This applies to both the Master of Arts (two years) and the Master of Arts (one year).
There are also compulsory courses specific to each specialisation – for the Master of Arts (two years) constituting between 30 and 37.5 credits. Compulsory courses are offered at least once during the programme. Some specialisations instead offer several alternative compulsory courses from which the students can choose.
Elective courses (15–22.5 credits) are second-cycle courses common to all specialisations. Students choose elective courses in consultation with the programme coordinator.
Optional courses (30 credits) can be chosen freely from courses offered across the University. The student chooses optional courses in consultation with the programme coordinator. Optional courses can be chosen from among the elective courses.
If you choose to take the Master of Arts (one year) instead of the Master of Arts (two years), you have the same selection of courses, however the distribution of credits are different. You’ll find more information under each specialisation.
