The Centre for Languages and Literature offers students access to the most modern resources for research and education. You will meet and study together with students from 13 different fields of specialisation. As a Master´s student, you will have the possibility of receiving funding for a stay abroad to conduct research on your Master s thesis through grants available from the Birgit Rausing Language Programme.

One profile area within phonetics in Lund is prosody, which deals with speech melody and rhythm. This profile is a characteristic feature of the Master´s courses in Phonology, Sounds of the World´s Languages and Experimental Phonetics. Descriptive phonetics and speech technology are other areas that Master's students in phonetics may focus on. The Humanities Laboratory is an important resource for students of experimental phonetics.

Contents

The Master of Arts in Language and Linguistics offers 13 specialisations. The many specialisations help to provide a broad selection of advanced courses in languages and in linguistics. As the programme offers many optional elements, students can choose freely between courses and design a programme to suit their interests.

There are several different types of courses:

Compulsory courses for all specialisations include the introductory course The Philosophy of Science for Linguists and the concluding Master's thesis. This applies to both the Master of Arts (two years) and the Master of Arts (one year).

There are also compulsory courses specific to each specialisation – for the Master of Arts (two years) constituting between 30 and 37.5 credits. Compulsory courses are offered at least once during the programme. Some specialisations instead offer several alternative compulsory courses from which the students can choose.

Elective courses (15–22.5 credits) are second-cycle courses common to all specialisations. Students choose elective courses in consultation with the programme coordinator.

Optional courses (30 credits) can be chosen freely from courses offered across the University. The student chooses optional courses in consultation with the programme coordinator. Optional courses can be chosen from among the elective courses.

If you choose to take the Master of Arts (one year) instead of the Master of Arts (two years), you have the same selection of courses, however the distribution of credits are different. You’ll find more information under each specialisation.
