INFORMATION SESSION FOR PROSPECTIVE MA STUDENTS ON 25 JANUARY 2012; see our website for more!

The M.A. in North American Studies is a two-year research-oriented program. We invite applications from graduates dedicated to transdisciplinary work and intercultural exchange who wish to gain a thorough expertise in North American cultures, literatures, politics, histories and economics. Our program (120 CP) has literary and cultural studies at its core and offers you a unique variety of potential fields of specialization. Because our Master Program builds on the tradition and success of our North American Studies Program, established in 1990, and works in joint venture and close cooperation with the Master program in North American Studies in Cologne, you can focus on areas of your own scholarly interest at a large number of schools and departments both in Bonn and Cologne. While you undergo systematic training in transdisciplinary work and debate, you will also have the opportunity to conduct original research for your M.A. thesis. We maintain long-standing alliances with US and Canadian universities and scholars and operate in close contact with the embassies of these countries, with research facilities and cultural institutions, as well as thinkers and representatives from the spheres of politics and economics. We operate across a wide array of media and remain closely linked to our many alumni who have pursued careers in politics, journalism, publishing, public administration, the foreign service, commerce, law, teaching and research. If you have similar professional aspirations, our M.A. in North American Studies will put you on the right track!

Contents

The M.A. in North American Studies offers you seven carefully designed and coordinated modules of which you can choose five. The modules Literary & Cultural Studies, North American Studies in Other Disciplines, and Research constitute the program’s mandatory core, offered at both universities, Bonn and Cologne. In addition, you select two areas of specialization from the fields of Politics & Society and Economics (taught in Bonn) and History & Society and Postcolonial Studies (taught in Cologne). A convenient train connection takes you from Bonn to Cologne in less than 30 minutes; since students have free access to public transport this is an easy and inexpensive commute.

From the first term on, we encourage research toward an original and engaged M.A. thesis to which you dedicate the final term of your studies.

In addition, the North American Studies Program features various scholarly events and activities, including our Lectures Series, symposia, panel discussions, and field trips.
