Location of University of Birmingham

The Graduate School of Political Science and International Studies (POLSIS) offers a wide range of professionally orientated courses. You may opt for a general multidisciplinary approach or choose from a range of more specialised programmes with a more specific career orientation.

We arrange study visits to NATO and the EU in Brussels, and we have an extensive programme of visiting speakers involving British and overseas academics, diplomats and other professionals.

This programme is for students who want an advanced knowledge of the main issues, problems and actors in the diverse region of East Asia today, or who wish to expand their knowledge of a dynamic and rapidly changing key economic region of the world, or to pursue any area of professional life in, or linked to, East Asia. A prior knowledge of the region is not necessary.


Contents

This MA examines the theory and practice of international relations in the region of East Asia. The core module, Asia Pacific Security, focuses on:

* Regional institutions
* Identity
* Nuclear weapons and US hegemony
* China's position
* The war on terror
* Territorial disputes
* Peacekeeping
* Post-conflict reconstruction
* Transnational crime
* Human rights
* Environmental security

You can choose from a wide range of optional modules. In addition, you will be expected to complete a 13,500-word dissertation on a relevant topic of your choice.

IELTS

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

* For the MA programme you require a good Honours degree or its equivalent.
* For those whose first language is not English, a TOEFL or IELTS Certificate is required.( IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any band, TOEFL 580 Paper- based test / 237 Computer-based test)
* Entry at Graduate Diploma level is possible for those with a reasonable first degree.
* Graduate Diploma students can upgrade to the MA on satisfactory examination performance.

Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE): Grade A (Score: 80)
