An International Perspective on Urban Agglomerations

The Masters Programme is based on an integrated international orientation.
It is organised and implemented by the Fachhochschule Frankfurt am Main – University of Applied Sciences, Germany , in cooperation with renowned international partner universities for an exchange course in the third semester.

The exposure to teaching and planning environments of different cultures forms an important intention of the programme, contributing to intercultural sensibility and competencies.
The Master Programme consists of four semesters.
The specific study contents during the first two semesters at the Fachhochschule Frankfurt am Main provide the students with a broad understanding and basic knowledge of urban agglomerations.
The modules concentrate on a structured study programme and introduce and deal with all relevant topics, including planning, environmental infrastructure, mobility, governance as well as social and cultural issues.
The third semester is an international exchange semester. The Fachhochschule Frankfurt am Main has cooperation agreements with partner universities worldwide, offering master courses in similar fields.
In the fourth semester the students return to the Fachhochschule Frankfurt am Main to write their Master Thesis.

Study Programme

The Masters Course "Urban Agglomerations" is completely taught in English. It comprises twelve modules with 5 to 30 credits each and the final Master Thesis (30 credits), in total 120 ECTS-credits.

The students spend three semesters in Frankfurt (semester 1, 2 and 4) and one exchange semester at an international partner university.

In detail, the study programme comprises the following modules:

First semester at Fachhochschule Frankfurt am Main – University of Applied Sciences:

  • Module 1.1: Urbanisation and Housing in a Global Context
    (5 credits)
  • Module 1.2: Urban and City-regional Development
    (5 credits)
  • Module 1.3: Urban Renewal and Redevelopment
    (5 credits)
  • Module 1.4: Landscape and Environmental Planning
    (5 credits)
  • Module 1.5: Urban Transport and Mobility
    (5 credits)
  • Module 1.6: GIS and Public Informations Systems
    (5 credits)

Second semester at Fachhochschule Frankfurt am Main – University of Applied Sciences:

  • Module 2.1: Urban Infrastructure 1: Water and Sewage
    (5 credits)
  • Module 2.2: Urban Infrastructure 2: Energy Supply and
    Waste Management
    (5 credits)
  • Module 2.3: Social and Cultural Challenges of Urban Agglomerations
    (5 credits)
  • Module 2.4: City-regional Governance
    (5 credits)
  • Module 2.5: Interdisciplinary Project Work
    (10 credits)

Third semester at one of the International Partner Universities:

  • Module 3.1: International Exchange Course
    (30 credits)

Fourth semester at Fachhochschule Frankfurt am Main – University of Applied Sciences:

  • Module 4.1: Master Thesis and Colloquium
    (30 credits)

In its specific aims, the course is primarily practically oriented, training and qualifying for a professional career and responsible position in the public, semi-public or private sector, such as urban and regional administrations and local authorities with their planning or management departments, development corporations, free-lance consultants, real estate agencies, research bodies, international institutions etc.

The overall conception aims to approach and solve complex urban problems in interdisciplinary teams and to prepare decision-makers for their future tasks as well in developed as in developing countries.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

The target group is graduates from all countries all over the world holding a diploma, a bachelor or an equivalent first academic degree confirming to EU first degree standards in

architecture,
civil engineering,
urban, regional, landscape or environmental planning,
facility management,
surveying,
real estate,
geo-informatics,
or other planning-related disciplines,

training for a career and relevant position in the public or private sector,
like urban and regional administration and authorities (e.g. planning and management departments), development corporations, free-lance consultants, real estate agencies, research institutes, and others.
