The 2nd cycle degree programme in Music Disciplines provides in-depth knowledge of the history of western music as an art and science, as well as its techniques, and the tradition of allied theoretical, philosophical and critical thought, in relation to other arts and sciences. The degree programme offers an array of subjects including historical musicology (centred on the acquisition of knowledge and historical-philological methods of investigation), philosophical-systematic musicology (exploring the association of music with art, philosophy,aesthetics, psychology and analytical methodology), ethnic musicology (studying the oral music traditions of European and non-European populations), pedagogy and music teaching (music as a way of educating individuals and as a specific subject in education), and music heritage (knowledge, protection, management and appreciation of the vestiges of civilisations pertaining to the western music heritage).

Extra-curricular activities
Students who choose an internship as part of their Study Plan (6 ECTS) can complete a period of internship of 150 hours with an Organisation, Institution or Company that has an agreement with the University.
International mobility
The student mobility programmes promoted by the University of Bologna in collaboration with other Universities in the European Union, as well as a number of non-EU Universities, offer the opportunity to do a period of study or an internship abroad.
The University of Bologna provides students with scholarships either for a period of study abroad or to prepare their written paper for the final exam, or subsequently to develop work on the subject of their final paper with a view to publication.
Final examination
To obtain the 2nd cycle Degree students must sit a final examination displaying their achievement of the learning results demanded by the degree programme. The final exam consists in discussing an original dissertation, whose characteristics are defined in the Degree Programme Regulations
Admission requirements and assessment of previously acquired knowledge/competences
To successfully follow the Second-cycle degree in Music disciplines (class LM 45) active at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of The University of Bologna students must have the following specific knowledge and competences:
(a) an overview of knowledge in the whole history of art music;
(b) core competency in the techniques of music (harmony, counterpoint, metric, morphology);
(c) awareness that musicology is divided into at least four different disciplines: historical musicology, systematic musicology, ethnomusicology, music education;
(d) basic skills in computer and, if Italian-speaking, in an EU language other than Italian, if non-Italian, in spoken and written Italian.
Admission to the second-cycle degree programme is subject to the requirements indicated at point 1 together with the assessment of an adequate level of personal preparation as indicated at point 2.
(1) Admission requirements
The admission requirements are as follows:
A) students must possess a 1st cycle degree in one of the degree classes, ex D.M. 270/04, ex D.M. 509/99, ex Law 508/99 or possess a degree valid under the previous university systems or other suitable qualification obtained abroad.
B) students must have acquired at least:
· 30 CFU in one or both of the following scientific-disciplinary sectors related to the Second-cycle degree in Music disciplines:
L-ART/07 – Musicologia e Storia della musica
L-ART/08 – Etnomusicologia
or, if you hold level I or II diploma issued by a Conservatory ex Law 508/1999, at least 30 CFU in technical-musical disciplines
· 18 CFU distributed in the following related areas:
- 6 CFU in the field of Philosophy (M-FIL/01, M-FIL/02, M-FIL/03, M-FIL/04, M-FIL/05, M-FIL/06, M-FIL/07,08; M-DEA/01; M-PED/01; M-PSI/01);
- 6 CFU in the field of History (L-ANT/02,03; M-STO/01,02,04)
- 6 CFU in the field of Literature (L-FIL-LET/10, L-FIL-LET/11, L-FIL-LET/12; L-LIN/01, L-LIN/03, L-LIN 05, L-LIN 10, L-LIN 13)
Admission to the second-cycle degree programme for graduates who do not have the above requirements will be subject to assessment by a Committee which will interview applicants to ascertain their possession of the knowledge and competences required and determine their eligibility.
2) Assessment of an adequate level of personal preparation
Assessment of personal preparation is deemed satisfactory for students with a first cycle degree mark of 70/110 or over.
Graduates with a degree mark lower than 70/110 must attend an interview for assessment of their personal preparation. The interview is assessed by the same Committee that is responsible for evaluating the admission requirements.
The dates for the assessment of curricular requirements and the interviews to establish an adequate level of personal preparation will be published on the Faculty website. The interviews will be held between September and December.
N.B.
For students with qualifications obtained abroad, the assessment of admission requirements (suitability of the qualification to the degree class indicated, evaluation of the curriculum, credits and learning outcomes in line with the competences and the scientific-disciplinary sectors envisaged, final mark achieved) is carried out through examination of the applicant's curriculum by the Board of Study Programme which will determine whether an interview is necessary to determine the student's level of personal preparation. The interview can also be held in videoconference.
