This degree is taught in conjunction with the Department of Political Science and International Studies (POLSIS).

With this programme you are able to explore critically the development of social and political theory and the key current debates. The sociological component of this degree is run by the Social Theory research cluster, which has strengths in:

* Critical theory
* Postmodernism
* Critical realism
* The philosophy of the social sciences
* Theories of modernity, social movements, and reflexivity


Contents

Compulsory modules
Students are required to take the two modules in list A and to choose two modules from list B (totaling 80 credits).

List A:

* Social Theory: Epistemology, Empowerment And Politics (20 credits)
* Social Theory: Critical Theory After Marx (20 credits)

List B:

* Revolution And Enlightenment (20 credits)
* Totalitarianism And The State (20 credits)
* Multiculturalism And Religious Conflict (20 credits)
* Democracy, Power And Citizenship (20 credits)
* Choice of optional modules (40 credits)

Dissertation
Dissertation (60 credits) - MA students to submit a 13,500 word (not applicable to Diploma Students)

IELTS

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Requirements

For the MA programme you require a good Honours degree or its equivalent. For those whose first language is not English, a TOEFL or IELTS Certificate is required. Entry at Graduate Diploma level is possible for those with a reasonable first degree. Graduate Diploma students can upgrade to the MA on satisfactory examination performance.
