The degree programme aims to form 2nd cycle degree graduates with good linguistic-cultural and linguistic-theoretical competencies in a European or non-European foreign language and to train students to teach Italian and Italian culture to foreigners.

Second cycle degree graduates will have a great deal of competencies in Italian literature, political-cultural history, art and music, and will possess flexible methodological instruments to deal with mediation matters and interculturalism and the complex issues related to a multiethnic population.

The specificity of this course, which may also include placements, internships, workshops and other learning activities which are functional to learning, responding to the new Italian language and culture teacher profile for the now-multiethnic middle and secondary schools (the issue of a primary qualification in this field is currently being assessed).

FOREIGN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE TEACHER

Main functions:

* Planning and developing teaching programs to transfer the knowledge of Italian language and culture to foreigners with particular attention to the origins and age of students;
* Teaching Italian language and culture to classes of Italian and multiethnic pupils;
* Planning teaching programmes and scholastc activities related to intercultural mediation.

Career opportunities:

* linguistic centres, public and private bodies and associations that deal with language teaching in Italy and abroad;
* secondary state schools (the qualification to teach must be obtained as defined by Ministerial provisions).

LANGUAGE MEDIATION AND INTEGRATION LINGUISTIC-CULTURAL EXPERT

Main functions:

* Consultancy and participation in planning and development of mediation projects in intercultural contexts and issues related to a multiethnic population;
* Organisation and coordination of language promotion and mediation;
* Organisation of projects and interventions that focus on the management of language and cultural problems of foreign immigrants in Italy.

Career opportunities:

* public bodies (educational and social sectors);
* trade unions, courts, offices for communication with immigrants in institutions and companies;
* consular-diplomatic offices, bodies and associations involved in interlingual and intercultural relationships.

The degree programme project has been submitted to selected external stakeholders in order to receive their opinions and feedbacks on the learning outcomes and the professional profiles.


Contents

Italian language and culture for foreigners Curriculum: during the programme, students will acquire solid theoretical foundations on communication processes in general and in particular on the mechanisms of cultural and literal production and communication. Students will acquire the theoretical foundations of language also in relation to problems concerning studying and teaching Italian as a foreign language, and at the same time they will also study two foreign modern languages (studied also during the three-year cycle).

Final examination

Students must present a comparative degree thesis that foresees an amount of research equal to the number of credits required, on a subject area related to Italian language, culture and people, included in the study programme and on which the student has already been examined.

* Laurea (First cycle degree/Bachelor - 180 ECTS) obtained at any University
or, alternatively,
* a post-secondary qualification obtained in a non-university Higher Education Institute allowing for the continuation of the university studies in the subsequent level, but provided that the secondary school diploma was attained after at least a 12-year education
