The department is renowned for the research and development on Linux, mobile Linux, and wireless communications. It is highly visible in international standardisation forums and organizations such as IETF, W3C, WWRF, and IFIP. Globally known research partners include Nokia, Nokia Siemens Networks, Ericsson, and F-Secure.
The Faculty boasts a group of international experts including Patrik Floréen, Jussi Kangasharju, Markku Kojo, Lea Kutvonen, and Sasu Tarkoma.
The present trend in computing and applications leads from distributed applications to more loosely-coupled networked computing solutions. In this development, the Internet forms a kind of common backbone for building distributed and networking solutions at multiple levels of abstraction (e.g., data communication, distributed applications, networked business).
The subprogramme of Networking and Services thus addresses several focus areas: The theme around Future Internet studies global architecture of this backbone, especially considering the needs of mobile users. Secondly, various types of middlewares and software platformsprovide the computing environment for information processing. Further, special conceptual needs arise from inter-enterprise computing. The theme around service interoperability focuses on global business services and business networks, and the supporting infrastructure facilities for social and business networks and communities.
The sub-programme educates experts and strategic renovators of global architectures.

Finnish Universities are accredited by the law. Universities are responsible for the quality and continuous development of their education and other operations. Legislation also requires them to regularly perform external evaluations of their operations and quality systems and to publish the results of such evaluations. Finnish HEIs decide on their own quality systems, and the comprehensiveness, functioning and effectiveness of the systems are evaluated in the audits, which are valid for six years.
