The Master's programme offers foreign students, primarily from developing countries, a higher degree in archaeology. The aim of the programme is to qualify candidates for research and teaching in archaeology and related disciplines in their home countries. This will be taken into consideration in the preparation of the individual study courses.
The master's programme in Archaeology has a global and regional orientation. Methodological and theoretical perspectives are on material culture in different local and regional context as a source for study.
The master's programme leads to the degree Master of Philosophy in Archaeology. It is a two year programme (120 ECTS credits).
Students are expected to become familiar with central methods in archaeological research: Typology, Classification, spatial distribution, ethno archaeology, text and material culture. There is a course in method, but is also expected to be used in practical work with the thesis.
The master's programme consists of five courses, together 60 ECTS credits, and a master's thesis of 60 ECTS credit (70 pages). The thesis is the central part of the study, and the five courses are intended to lay basis for formulation of a realistic fieldwork plan, and an efficient fieldwork of duration of maximum six months. The thesis should be relevant to the candidate's home institution's needs and good scientific quality, the thesis shall be an independent piece of work, which shall demonstrate the student's ability to handle a specific research problem First autumn term Students attend Cape Field School where they are required to participate in surveying, excavations and analysis of field material.
They will also attend the course on Selected essay on African Archaeology. ARK319: Archaeological fieldwork Students are supervised in the field. Exams; students are evaluated according to pass/failure in practical handling and analysis of the field material. 15 credits points. ARK320 - Cape Field school: Theory: Evolution of Man with an emphasis on Africa. Lectures and seminars. Exam, a written essay of 10 pages. 15 credit points Spring term ARK303 Design of the master thesis Students are required to write a project proposal, under close supervision.
Exam, acceptance of project outlines. 10 credit points ARK304 Special subject related to master degree in archaeology. Students place their project proposal in a wider, global context. Supervision and course work. Exam, students will write an essay of maximum 10 pages, marked according to their performance. 10 credit points ARK305 Archaeological methods Course work and seminars, focusing on different methods and theories relevant for analysing material culture in a local and wider spatial context.
Three written papers based on participation in workshops. One individual essay of maximum 3000 words. Evaluated according to pass/failure. 10 credit points.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testA first degree (bachelor's degree) of three or four years' duration from an approved institution of higher education, as well as proficiency in the English language.
Prerequisites
Your bachelor's degree must have a specialisation in Archaeology. Such a specialisation should correspond to at least three semesters of full-time study.
