The chemical industry has been growing over the last few years mainly due to the development of new drugs and materials. Chemistry has also become more essential within biology, marine systems, and atmospheric science as the research within these areas are more and more based on research on a molecular level. The master program is created to meet the demands for relevant chemical knowledge. Chemistry has an essential role in society, not only within areas connected to chemical industries but also to other fast growing working areas such as biology, medicine and physics. More recently the combinations such as chemistry/economy and chemistry/law have started to attract certain interests.
University of Gothenburg offers a broad base within the chemistry area but it also enables the student to specialize in various subdisciplines, for example, analytical chemistry, marine chemistry, atmospheric science, biochemistry, electro chemistry, physical chemistry, organic chemistry, and inorganic chemistry. Some graduates has gone on to careers in higher education and research, others has chosen to work in the private or public sector. Working areas that may be relevant is research and development in private companies or conservation or environmental protection within the public sector. Nowadays there is a great demand for knowledge in analytical chemistry in almost every area of work that has a chemical profile.
The masterprogram requires a bachelor of science, 180 hec. You can choose a degree project for 30, 45 or 60 hec. Usually you are taking courses the first year and start your degree project during the second year. The degree project normally coincides with the specialization within your advanced level courses.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

A Bachelor´s degree in Science or the equivalent to 180 higher education credits (HEC) or 180 ECTS credits at an accredited university, with a minimum of 120 HEC in chemistry including a thesis, or equal qualifications as assessed by the Graduate School. English B level or English proficiency equivalent to IELTS 6.5 no part under 5.5 or TOEFL 575 p, TWE score 4.5 is also required.
Selection is based upon the number of credit points from previous university studies, maximum 225 hec.
