The studies in Interior and Textile Design approach interior design from the perspective of interaction between humans and spaces. The starting points lie in user-driven interior and textile design. Textiles are one of the most important elements of interior design. They can be functional textiles in the home, artistic elements in public spaces, acoustic surfaces or innovative parts of the built environment. The interior and textile designer is a person who influences the aesthetic, experiential and multisensory qualities and well-being of a space.
The studies encompass textile design and production, textile art and spatial design. Thanks to studies in design technology, students learn to build visual, multisensory complexes. Three-dimensional modelling allows them to design and analyse spaces.
The final space is the origin and context of textile design. Traditional product development and research of decorative and functional textiles have given way to the design and research of diverse spaces, interior designs and materials. New technical advances and materials have opened opportunities in the fields of art, textiles and architecture.
Some of the most interesting applications and research environments in the field, besides homes, are modern tourism and service environments. Within these, some of the focal points of research and design are well-being, multisensory qualities and functionality.
The degree program in Textile and Clothing Design offers the three-year Bachelor of Art (120 credits) and the five-year Master of Art (180 credits) degrees. The Department also maintains a doctoral program, admission to which requires the master’s degree.
Two concentrations are available in Department’s programs: Interior and Textile Design or Clothing Design. The basic and subject studies in these fields provide graduates with the necessary competence to practice a profession as well as the broad-based knowledge needed to approach their work in artistic, technical and commercial perspectives.
Advanced studies in the major subject seek to deepen the students’ professional perspective on the field of textile and clothing design and to enhance their insights into the field with a view to doing research.
The degrees include general studies, which provide a foundation in language and communication as well as in entrepreneurial economics and marketing. Art and culture studies guide encompass the study of art and culture, aesthetics and the philosophy of science. CAD courses in design technology create a foundation for computer-aided textile and clothing design.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testEducational Background
An applicant, who has completed a first degree (normally a bachelor’s degree) in a relevant field of study from an institution of higher education, entitling her/him to apply for master’s degree studies in her/his home country, may apply to master’s degree studies without taking an entrance examination.
Language Requirements
The University of Lapland offers master’s degree studies for international applicants in certain degree programmes. Although some courses in these programmes are primarily taught in Finnish, it is possible to complete the programme while studying in English. Here, students can either study in the same groups as the Finnish students or individually, and their studies can be tailor-made so that they can complete all the studies in English. Because of these special study circumstances, personal study plans are made with each international student at the beginning of their studies and applicants are accepted on the basis of their previous studies and their language skills.
