Medical Life Sciences bridges the gap between sciences and medical studies. Students get to know clinical research from scratch; they learn how to investigate diseases/disease mechanisms, how to put research results to use for prevention, diagnosis and therapies of diseases, in particular of so-called civilisation diseases. The focus topics centre around major disease indications and contain substantial parts of patient-oriented studies, data acquisition and analysis within current scientific studies and projects on clinical problems on a molecular level. Studies are supported by short-term internships in specialized clinics of the university hospital; understanding the clinical manifestations of disease mechanisms investigated in the lab is an important part of the programme. The cell biological aspects and the genetics of diseases such as Crohn’s disease, neurodermatitis, malign tumors or neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases are researched in the labs, complemented by clinical investigations. Clinical manifestations in humans form the backbone around which the Master’s programme revolves.
From the basics in semesters 1 and 2 to clinical practicals and lab experiments for the Master’s thesis, individual scientific training always takes first priority. Experimental work in state-of-the-art research labs is essential in Medical Life Sciences, clinical internships and analyses of scientific data constitute the core of our patient-oriented teaching in all semesters. Accompanying lectures, seminars and elective modules complement the programme’s curriculum.
Medical Life Sciences revolves around five focus areas:
Inflammation/Oncology/Neurological diseases
How do molecular processes trigger the onset of disease, its course and the therapeutic success in chronic inflammatory diseases, cancer or neurological disorders? Which role do genetic factors play in the susceptibility of humans to civilisation diseases such as Crohn’s disease, neurodermatitis or particular forms of dementia? Medical Life Sciences teaches scientific approaches and methods to investigate questions like these that are being researched with high priority internationally.
Ageing in humans
A complicated network of molecular mechanisms and genetic factors is at the bottom of the ageing process. To better understand the interactions within this network is of vital importance for the public health sector to take care of a society that gets progressively older. Research on ageing carried out in Kiel is internationally renowned and translated into teaching in Medical Life Sciences.
Evolutionary Medicine
Evolutionary Medicine looks at the interrelations between environmental factors and the human genetic make-up, the cause-and-effect relationship between evolution of disease and susceptibility.
Students choose their specialisation from these five focus areas. Acquiring a thorough knowledge of facts, figures and methods, developing and testing your own hypotheses, getting to know your focus area on a medical and on a molecular level - Medical Life Sciences provides the opportunity for just that.

The programme strongly focuses on research and demands knowledge of biology on university level (Bachelor's). Basics in molecular science are an advantage.
The programme will largely be conducted in English. Medical and patient-based modules will be taught in German. It is vital that you have a thorough knowledge of English as well as a very good knowledge of German.
