Increasingly, universities and funding bodies are seeing research methods training as an important preliminary to PhD and other doctoral level study. In addition, a thorough grounding in research methodologies and transferable research skills offers an important preparation for research-oriented employment and further career advancement across the life course.
The programme draws upon the expertise of a multidisciplinary team of research-active academics, from education and social science, performing arts, business, health and social care and clinical and biological sciences. Our MSc is designed to support beginner and intermediate researchers, and serve either as preparation for doctoral level studies or be taken as an independent Masters award.
Programme Structure
This course usefully combines a core of research philosophy and skills with aspects of information retrieval and critical analysis. A range of qualitative and quantitative approaches are employed throughout, including: ethnography and case study; feminist theory and methodology; critical race theory and post-structuralism; and quantitative research design, questionnaires and statistics.
Core taught modules for the MSc award:
* Survey and Questionnaire Design
* Philosophy, Theory and Practice of Research
* An Introduction to Quantitative Research Design and Statistics
* An Introduction to Qualitative Research
* Information Retrieval, Appraisal and Synthesis for Research
For the award of MSc, there are two routes available:
