The Degree
The Master´s programme leads to the degree of Master of Philosophy in English. It is a two-year programme. (120 ECTS credits).
Objectives / Contents
The aim of the master's programme in English is to improve your skills, knowledge and insight in English studies in general, and in your area of specialisation (linguistics, literary or cultural studies) in particular.
The programme will develop a critical and independent attitude in you as a student through theoretical and methodological teaching, as well as further developing your written and oral skills in the English language. In order to reach these goals, you will need to work independently with the course literature in preparation for your own independent work on the master's thesis.
Programme profile
English is a large and diverse discipline, and the Department of foreign languages offers courses and supervision within British, American and other English-speaking literatures and cultures. They cover literature of all kinds and periods from the sixteenth century to the present, and discuss literary, cultural and methodological problems from a range of theoretical perspectives that reflect the research interests of the academic staff.
In English linguistics the department has wide professional expertise, and we can offer guidance within a broad range of areas such as applied linguistics, syntax, cognitive linguistics, translation theory, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, historical linguistics or combinations of these subjects.
Master thesis credits
The master's thesis is a work of advanced study, of between 70 and 110 pages. It is designed to show that you have extensive knowledge of both the subject and relevant research, to reveal your study of related theoretical material and to demonstrate your mastery of the appropriate methodology. You will receive individual guidance during the research and writing process, and are encouraged to find a subject early in the second semester.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testA first degree (Bachelor´s degree) of three or four years´ duration from an approved institution of higher education. Your Bachelor´s degree must have a specialisation in English. It should correspond to at least 1 1/2 years of full-time study and include courses in the areas of linguistics and British and American literature and culture.
In addition to a relevant academic background, all candidates will be selected on the basis of achievements in previous studies. In general, applicants must attain a First class or grade of "A" in order to be considered for a place in the English master's program. Candidates with 2nd Class Lower Division are not normally considered.
In addition to having a BA degree in English all applicants must provide additional evidence of English language proficiency, for example Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing Service (IELTS).
