This two-year Erasmus Mundus Master's programme in International Migration and Social Cohesion (MISOCO) offers students the opportunity to study international migration in three European countries.
The Joint European Master in International Migration and Social Cohesion (MISOCO) explores the critical elements of international migration and the incorporation of immigrants in the societies they enter. It teaches students advanced theories, techniques, and methodologies in the field of Migration Studies, so that they will be able to translate perceived societal problems into relevant social scientific research questions and contribute to their solutions by combining insights from fundamental social theory with substantive theories. This Master is unique to Europe. It brings together those who have an interest in creating a shared outlook for Europe in terms of migration studies. Partner universities not only teach but also research migration-related issues, and are so able to offer students state-of-the art knowledge in related specialisation areas. The students are selected on the basis of their qualifications. There is also the possibility of an Erasmus Mundus Scholarship.
Contents
Students are expected to obtain 30 ECTS credits in each of the four semesters of the degree, totaling 120 ECTS credits.
- Semesters one, two and three consist of taught modules.
- Semester one is based at the University of Amsterdam
- Semester two is based at the University of Deusto
- Semester three is based at the University College Dublin, University of Latvia or University of Osnabrück depending on the student's specialization with a possible mobility to one of the Third Country partners
- Semester four is also based at the university where the student specializes and concerns the writing of the Master thesis under the supervision of three academic staff members involved in the programme. The subject of the thesis must be mutually agreed upon by the student and the academic adviser(s).
The thesis must be submitted before the end of the fourth semester.

Degree requirements
The multiples degrees are awarded only after successful completion of both the course requirements and the Master's thesis.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Language test: Applicants who are nationals of countries other than the United States, Australia, United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland or New Zealand are required to submit an English test score that meets specific requirements: TOEFL (Computer-based test 250 pt.,Internet based test 100 pt., paper-based test 600 pt.) or IELTS (7) Certificate. Applicants must arrange for an official copy of the English test score to be sent directly by the testing institute to the Coordinator before the application deadline. Previous education: Students with academic bachelorôs degree (or equivalent) in social sciences discipline closely related to the programme (sociology, social/cultural anthropology, political science, and (human) geography) are invited to apply, provided that they meet entry requirements as specified on our website. Students with degrees in the other social sciences International Relations and International Development and/or have at least 60 EC in Social Sciences Methodology and Theory may also apply. Accreditation
All the universities have been legally through the process of accreditation taking into consideration the different procedures in each country.
- University of Amsterdam (UvA): Students receive a Master's degree in Sociology (Sociologie). The quality of this Master's degree has been accredited by the Accreditation Organisation of The Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO). This means that upon successful completion of the MISOCO programme students will receive a legally recognised Master of Science (MSc) degree. The master has been accredited by the Accreditation Organisation of The Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO) on 24 February 2004. CROHO code: 66601
- University of Deusto: the master has been approved as an Official Postgraduate Programme (Programa oficial de postgrado) by the “Dirección Oficial de Universidades del Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia”, as registered in the BOE no 157 of Monday 3 July 2006.
- University College Dublin: Master in Social Science. The proposal for the approval and accreditation of the Joint EU Masters in International Migration and Social Cohesion will be submitted by the School of Sociology, following its approval by the School Graduate Studies Committee, and must then be submitted and approved by the following: College of Human Sciences Graduate Studies Board, University Graduate Programmes Board, University Academic Council Executive Committee.
- University of Latvia: the programme is accredited by Higher Education Quality Evaluation Center (HEQEC) 12.12.2007 (Licenced 26.12.2000), Accreditation period ends 26.12.2013. Programm code: 45310
- University of Osnabrück: The Master Programme is accredited by the accreditation body ‘Zentrale Evaluations- und Akkreditierungsagentur Hannover (ZEvA)’, 20th of February 2007.
