The study of art history should start from original works of art. Where better, then, to study the history of Netherlandish art than in the Netherlands? This comprehensive, one-year Master’s specialisation is unique in the Dutch academic world, exploring the history of the visual arts and architecture of the Netherlands from the Late Middle Ages to the present. Taught in English, it gives students from different countries the opportunity to specialise in one of the most fascinating fields in art history.
During the fifteenth century, the Southern Netherlands were ruled by the Dukes of Burgundy, a highly refined court both artistically and otherwise. Around the same time, a class of wealthy burghers emerged as patrons for Flemish painters like Jan van Eyck and Hans Memling. In the late 1500s, the artistic centre of gravity shifted to the cities of Holland, where during the Dutch Golden Age – a period of extreme prosperity – Rembrandt, Vermeer and many other artists flourished. In modern times, the Netherlands rose to prominence in the art world once again, with artists from the Low Countries (the Kingdom of the Netherlands together with Flanders, part of present-day Belgium) such as Van Gogh, Mondrian and Rietveld leaving their mark on European – and to some extent also North American – art history.
If you decide to study Netherlandish Art and Architecture at Radboud University, you will find at your fingertips the objects of study themselves, as well as a vast collection of archival documents and secondary literature on this enormously rich artistic patrimony. Nijmegen presents ample possibilities for you to study (and enjoy) the crucial monuments in situ, as well as all the important collections, archives and libraries in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. Particularly for students from distant countries, Nijmegen is an ideal base for travelling by train, car or plane to museums in other European countries. Naturally, this element of personal observation of works of art is incorporated in our programme, which includes two five-day excursions organised and guided by specialists in the field.
During the programme, you become acquainted with and deepen your knowledge of Netherlandish art and architecture as well as the relevant theories and scientific methods. We value a broad, interdisciplinary approach with a perspective that explicitly takes into account the international context of Netherlandish art. And with the language learning facilities on offer at Radboud University, you get the chance to gain even more in-depth knowledge of the primary sources and literature by learning or improving your Dutch.
Netherlandish Art and Architecture in an International Perspective is a specialisation of the Master's Programme in Arts and Culture.
The following courses are offered:
Golden Age Painting (10 EC)
The Golden Age, often considered the heyday of Dutch art, stands at the core of the programme. A comprehensive series of lectures outlines painting (including drawing and printmaking) in Holland and Flanders from 1580 to 1740.
Early Netherlandish Painting (10 EC) or Modern Painting (10 EC)
Alongside the mandatory course in Golden Age Painting, you can choose a course either on the art of Netherlandish painting in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries – the renaissance and ‘Flemish primitives’ of the Southern Netherlands – oron modern Dutch and Belgian art from 1850 to the present day.
Architecture, Sculpture and Decorative Arts (5 EC)
The Netherlands has always commanded admiration in the field of painting. Netherlandish architecture, sculpture and decorative arts, however, are also held in high regard. Half of this course is dedicated to these media during the seventeenth century; the other half, once again, offers two alternatives, namely ‘Early Netherlandish', or ‘Modern'.
Five-day excursion around the Netherlands (5 EC)
Each year in December, a five-day excursion is organised, and students visit and study the crucial monuments and collections found throughout the Netherlands. Weekly tutorials will prepare you for the excursion, which is supervised by experts in the field.
Five-day excursion to Flanders (5 EC)
In May of each year, a second field trip will lead you to the most important sites and highlights of artistic production in Flanders. This excursion will also be prepared in tutorials and supervised by one of our professors.
Netherlandish Art Theory (5 EC)
In this course students will learn the historiography and theory of art of the Netherlands from the beginning of the sixteenth century to the twenty-first. They will trace the development of Netherlandish art-historical thought through the ages, both in order to provide a foundation for the understanding of Dutch and Flemish art as well as to reflect upon the past and present practice of writing about Netherlandish art history.
Master’s thesis (20 EC)
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
