The influence of EU policies and actions on spatial and environmental planning in the EU member states is ever increasing. European regions are more and more interlinked, and cooperation across national borders is now a routine aspect of the work of spatial and environmental planners. There are considerable differences in how planning is conducted across Europe, and planners are increasingly required to communicate across cultural and institutional boundaries. This European dimension of planning requires a new generation of spatial and environmental planners, who are aware of and can respond to as well as influence EU and international policy, are sensitive to cultural and institutional differences across Europe, and are capable to cooperate with spatial planners in other European countries.

PLANET Europe is the first integrated European Masters programme that offers a comprehensive education in the rich and dynamic area of European spatial planning. PLANET Europe gives students from all over the world the opportunity to acquire important skills and knowledge in European spatial planning, while at the same time benefiting from Europe’s cultural and linguistic diversity.

PLANET Europe, a two-year (120 ECs) integrated European Masters programme on European spatial planning, environmental policies and regional development

  • is a joint Masters Programme of Radboud University Nijmegen, Blekinge Institute of Technology and Cardiff University that prepares graduates for a career in environmental and spatial planning in Europe,
  • is for students who would like to better understand the influences of the European Union and international developments on space, the environment and the economy and who would like to address large-scale spatial challenges such as climate change or transnational river management in their future careers,
  • allows a specialisation on either European spatial planning and sustainable development (Nijmegen-Cardiff track) or on European spatial planning and regional economic development (Nijmegen-Karlskrona track) and leads to an internationally-recognised double degree (MSc) from leading European planning schools.

Contents

PLANET Europe is a collaborative programme taught over 2 years (4 Semesters) to a value of 120 ECs - European Credits. Prospective students need to choose their specialisation track during the application process and they have the following two options:

  • European Spatial Planning and Sustainable Development (RU/CU- track)
  • European Spatial Planning and Regional Economic Development (RU/BTH-track)

In both specialisations, all students start with a comprehensive introduction on the European dimension of spatial planning and the spatial impacts of EU policies in semester 1 at RU in Nijmegen. In semester 2 students either continue at CU in Cardiff and focus on sustainable development in policy and practice, or they continue at BTH in Karlskrona with a semester on innovation and cohesion in the EU.

In semester 3, students apply their knowledge to planning practice and receive further training on cross-national communication and presentation skills. Students complete their studies with an individual Master thesis on a topic of their choice under joint supervision from experts from two of the universities. Depending on the choice of track, student stay at Nijmegen, Cardiff and Karlskrona during the last two semesters.

Students will graduate from this integrated Masters programme with a double degree: one from Radboud University Nijmegen and one from either Cardiff University or Blekinge Institute of Technology, depending on their specialisation in the second semester.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
