Applied mechanics is all around us. You can be working with a variety of subjects from calculations on circumstances that make the bridge across Storebælt oscillate to examining which mechanisms that underlie osteoporosis.

Within solid state and fluid mechanics, which together constitute applied mechanics, you will find the answers to a range of questions like

* How should the wings of a windmill be dimensioned?
* How can the longevity of a computer chip or a fuel cell be calculated?
* Which surface coatings are suitable for tools and which are suitable for hip implants?
* How can the dynamical state of a racing car be analysed?
* How can the designing of a sail be optimised?

These examples demonstrate that the field of applied mechanics offers great opportunities for interdisciplinary work. It is possible to cooperate with the traditional mechanical industry but cooperation is also possible within the industry of composites and materials, the industry of electronics, the construction industry, and within the fields of biomechanics and biomaterials. Moreover, applied mechanics is a basic research discipline of scientific engineering which is internationally very attractive and which is represented at most universities worldwide. A career within research is therefore also possible.

The Master’s degree programme in Applied Mechanics is oriented towards students with a bachelor degree in Mechanics or equivalent and has interest in working on theoretical aspects in mechanical engineering. The degree programme will enable students to understand and apply advanced computational methods and tools. In the Applied Mechanics degree programme it is emphasised that students both get an opportunity to apply theories to problems of practical relevance, and that they acquire competences to continue on a PhD programme. The content includes elements such as stochastic/dynamic loads, structural dynamics/modal analysis, fatigue/fracture mechanics. The foundations for these specific subjects are for instance continuum mechanics and theory of plasticity.

A year divided into four terms
The teaching is divided into terms with four terms per year. Each term consists of a block of seven weeks followed by an examination period of 2-4 weeks.

Structure
The degree programme admits students biannually. The mathematics courses are provided biannually so that all new students follow applied mathematics during the first and second terms. The first four terms have subjects in continuum mechanics and dynamics, respectively. These are offered once per year so that the order changes dependent on when the programme is begun. The courses have a work load of 5 ECTS, the semester projects 10 ECTS and the final project work is 30 ECTS. The 5th and 6th terms offer a greater freedom of choice which can, as an example, be used for project work in collaboration with companies.

The possibilities of combining the mechanical courses with courses from the other departments at The University of Aarhus’s Faculty of Science have been emphasised. It is possible to accomplish the degree programme with a primary mechanical engineering profile possibly supplemented with selected courses from the Faculty of Science. It will also be possible to combine the engineering competences with a more scientifically oriented profile.

It is possible for the students to select courses from the Faculty of Science, AU, and create a personal profile of degree programme. During the programme, biannual development conversations will be offered where individual plans and selection of courses will be discussed.

Examples of Optional Courses
* Fracture Mechanics and Fatigue
* Composite Materials
* Windmill Technology
* Solid State Physics
* Laser Physics
* Surface Technology
* Control Technique
* Business Organisation and Management
* Patents

PhD programme
If you have the necessary skills and interest, you have the option of applying for admission to the PhD programme. In the PhD programme, you start working on a research project and are gradually trained through courses and personal guidance to become a researcher.
