The Master’s program in Science Education and Communication is a teacher’s training for Dutch students. The program consists of four specialist areas: Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. The program is given by the Eindhoven School of Education (ESoE).
Training begins at ESoE with a deepening of your chosen specialist area. This is followed by further training in pedagogy, teaching science, and teaching specialist subjects. You will do this in combination with an internship in education.
Teaching competence
You will be trained by ESoE to become a preparatory teacher in higher education. Your teaching competence will apply to all classes in further education and high school education. You will terminate your Master’s training with research into teaching practices.
The first year
Year 1: subject expertise and professional skills
The study program of this Master's program consists mainly of two parts. The subject contents primarily cover the field of expertise in which you wish to become a teacher. The other part focuses on teaching skills.
The subject part of the course guarantees an expansion and deepening of knowledge of the specific subject. The professional part comprises theory (pedagogy, science education, and subject-specific didactics) and practice in schools for further education.
Balanced practice and theory
The theory is practice-oriented. And the practice in school generates further questions about theoretical issues. The set-up of the program ensures that both of these components complement each other.
The second year
Year 2: converting knowledge into practical experience
The second year continues the theoretical framework of pedagogy, science education, and subject-specific didactics. Here too we translate theory into practice. This happens by means of prolonged teaching practice. With a portfolio to your credit, you can demonstrate your ability as a new teacher to instruct students in further education.
Your training is completed with a proposal for technical education and an extensive, practice-oriented research project. This frequently takes place as a commission from an organization for further education.
Elective subjects
There is space for four study points of the student's own choice (Capita Selecta) within the Master's program for Science Education and Communication. The selection will depend on their education requirements related to their ultimate qualifications. A student's choice is made in agreement with his or her mentor, with the approval of the examining board.
Practical Experience
There are three periods of practical experience within the Master's program for Science Education and Communication. These are firstly, the orientation practice period, followed by two periods (workplace experience 1 and 2) in further education. Depending on the field of specialization that has been chosen, there is frequently also a practice period in industry within the subject-oriented part of the Master's course.
Study abroad
The Science Education and Communication Master's program offers possibilities for studying abroad. Last year, for example, a group of students in subject-specific Didactics 2 took part in an international week in Greece. They were involved in a project for the development of science education.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testBachelor from a university in the Netherlands
Bachelor from TU/e
You can start directly on a connecting Master's program after successfully completing a Bachelor's program at TU/e. In all other cases a committee will decide if you will be admitted or not.
Bachelor from Delft University of Technology or University of Twente
If you have completed a Bachelor's program at one of the other two universities of technology in the Netherlands, you may also take a Master's program at TU/e. In the database of the transfer matrix you will see if you can be admitted directly to a Master's program, or if you first need to follow a number of courses from the Bachelor's program. You will only be admitted to the Master's program once you have successfully taken the final examination of the preparatory Bachelor's program.
Bachelor from another university in the Netherlands
Whether your prior education qualifies you for admission to one of the TU/e Master's programs is assessed on an individual basis. For this purpose you should apply for admission in writing to the Education and Student Service Center. Two separate committees will then assess whether you can be admitted.
Your application should in any case contain:
* the full name of your Bachelor's program and the university
* the name of the TU/e Master's program that you would like to follow
* a certified copy of your final or most recent academic transcript
* a certified copy of your Bachelor's diploma (if available)
Bachelor from a university outside the Netherlands
The general requirements for admission to the TU/e Master's of Science programs for students with a Bachelor’s degree from a university outside the Netherlands are:
* A relevant Bachelor's degree (or equivalent), based on a program of sufficient academic level and quality to be able to complete the TU/e Master's program in question.
* A Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 75% of the scale maximum.
* Sufficent mastery of the English language. In the case of the Master's program Medical Engineering, proficiency in the Dutch language is also required in the form of an NT2 II test.
There may also be specific additional requirements for some Master's programs, depending on the nature of your prior education.
Dutch hbo bachelor degree
If you have completed a Bachelor’s program at a Dutch hbo (university of Higher Professional Education also called University of Applied Sciences), this does not qualify you for direct admission to a TU/e Master's program. You will first need to follow a transition program. You can apply for a transition program. You can apply for a transition program at Studielink . Under ‘Master's programs', you will find the transition programs that correspond to the various Master's programs. The staff of the TU/e program will decide if your prior education qualifies you for the transition program.
Contracted transition program student
After completing the transition program, you may register for your chosen Master's program. If you have not yet fully completed the transition program, it may be possible, under certain conditions and with the approval of the Examinations Committee, to enroll as a ‘contracted transition program student'. This means you are not yet formally admitted to the Master's program, but you are permitted to take specific courses. When you have completed the remaining courses of the transition program, you may enroll in a Master's program.
From TU/e minor to Master’s
If you have successfully completed the TU/e minor for hbo students, you may directly qualify for admission to a TU/e Master's or you may only need to follow a limited transition program. This depends on which TU/e minor you have completed and which Master's program you want to take.
