The bioinformatics masters programme will provide you with a broad specialist competence in bioinformatics. You will also develop your own individual ability to solve problems related to biology, to plan and carry out analyses on molecular biology and biomedical data, and to collect, process and critically judge results from such data.

What will you study?

The curriculum contains courses focusing on analysis of large-scale molecular biological and biomedical data, bioinformatics algorithms as well as research and development in bioinformatics.

There is a computer science part of the programme, where you will concentrate on courses in Perl programming as well as the statistical language R, which are both highly used in bioinformatics. You will also carry out a master's degree project in the field of bioinformatics.

During your studies, lectures will be mixed with computer laboratory work. You will learn how to use various computerized tools for compiling and analyzing data from research projects and biological experiments, and to use various methods for analysis, for example sequence analysis and gene expression analysis.
The language of tuition is English.

After completed studies

Bioinformatics is a cross-disciplinary field in close connection with research in the life sciences. Therefore, a large proportion of the students who have successfully completed their bioinformatics masters degrees have found positions as PhD students in various universities, both in Sweden and internationally. Some former students now work as bioinformatics managers in the pharmaceutical and biotech industry. In addition, some of our former students now work as lecturers, teaching bioinformatics courses in universities or colleges.

Contents

The program’s first semester consists of both core courses and specialized courses at the advanced level in bioinformatics to provide the necessary knowledge for further studies on the subject. For the majority of courses during the first semester supervised exercises and assignments have a prominent role. These exercises are designed to develop skills in practical problem solving through application of relevant bioinformatics methods.

During the second semester a course on current bioinformatics research problems is given and which provides an introduction to research methodology, with a
focus on methodology with relevance in bioinformatics. Additionally, a course covering molecular markers is given that is coupled to educational profile, which is
the field of analysis of large-scale molecular biological and biomedical data . During this semester students will also carry out an independent thesis work of 15
credits. During the thesis work, the student should independently apply their knowledge to solve a current and relevant research problem in bioinformatics.

The following courses are included in the program:

  • Bioinformatics concepts and methods, Advanced level, 7.5 hp
  • Genomics, Advanced level, 7.5 hp
  • Bioinformatics - the research process, Advanced level, 7.5 hp
  • Bioinformatics analysis with Perl, A-level, 7.5 hp
  • Gene expression analysis with R, Advanced, 7.5 hp
  • Molecular markers for diagnosis and prognosis, Advanced level, 7.5 hp
  • Master Degree Project in Bioinformatics, Advanced Level, 15 hp

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
