Business Intelligence is the collective term for skills, technology, applications and methods of a systematic and scientific nature which an organisation can use to better understand its busienss activities and its environment. Business Intelligence creates a learning environment which makes it possible for organisations and companies to run their activities more effectively and more intelligently.
Unique Education
To attain the knowledge necessary for success in this field, students study subjects such as decision-making systems, data modelling, experimental planning, geographical information systems, optimisation, prognosis, simulation and statistical inferens, and understanding for business development and organisation during a period of two years. Our Master Programme in Business Intelligence is for the student who wants to gain in-depth knowledge and skills within all the parts of the Business Intelligence chain. Figur below shows how data is transformed into decisions and actions in the Busieness Intelligence value chain.
The first part is the collection of data which requires knowledge and skill within different measurement techniques as well as experimentation. The second and third parts involve data acquisition, processing and storage which require skills in advanced database techniques such as multi-dimensional database searching but also an understanding of the importance of metadata.
The fourth parts is the analysis which most often is in the form of mathematical modelling of data requiring skills within statistical modelling, descriptive statistics, forecasting, simulation texhniques, visualisation, and data mining. The fifth part is the actual decision making and action which requires an understanding of techniques such as benchmarking and counterfactual analysis, but also collective decision making and dissemination of information within organisations.
Business Intelligence (BI) is an umbrella term for the skills, technologies, applications and methods of systematic and scientific nature which an organisation uses to better understand its own business and environment. BI technologies are used to measure and describe an organisation‘s current and future operations. BI systems create a learning environment which allows organisations to run their businesses more efficiently and intelligently.

The programme is for a duration of two years. Each year is divided into two terms which are further subdivided into four periods ie two periods per term.
Year 1, Term 1, Periods 1 and 2 –students broaden their own knowledge and skills in the main field micro data analysis. This is a necessary foundation for the students to ultimately be able to acquire the entire Business Intelligence chain.
Students also acquire, with the help of various technologies, practical skills in collecting data within the field for any specific purpose. This practical experience of data collection facilitates studies in the subsequent parts of the Business Intelligence chain.
Year 1, Term 2, Periods 3 and 4 – this term commences with students taking the course Business Intelligence which covers the entire Business Intelligence chain. Emphasis is on data capture, data storage and decision making. In the courses such as Calculation, Modelling with R and Enterprise Resource Planning students penetrate the BI system via case studies. At the end of the first year students will have acquired sufficient knowledge of the Business Intelligence chain, and learned the techniques applicable along the chain.
Year 2, Term 1, Periods 1 and 2 - Students immerse themselves in data collection and data modelling and demonstrate ability to take responsibility for their own learning and managing projects. Students begin the academic year by developing a plan for their thesis. In the plan, students should identify a problem and formulate an investigative objective. Students should describe how they intend to solve the problem, state which materials they will base their analysis on, and how they will access that material. In addition, students should outline the educational needs they have and create a needs inventory which will act as the basis for the selection of elective courses within the programme. The plan must be delivered to a supervisory group for discussion and approval.
Year 2, Term 2, Periods 3 and 4 - Students complete their thesis.
