While the Latin American and Caribbean Countries experience a strong economic development, concerns on environmental degradation and contamination are continuously growing. The region faces serious challenges such as population growth, rapid urbanisation and industrialisation processes which require efficient environmental policies and programmes with respect to the sustainable management of natural resources.
The international master programme “Environment and Resources Management ENREM“ aims to qualify young professionals from Latin America and Germany to work successfully in the area of environmental management in an international context.
The programme draws upon the expertise and experience of the well established and accredited master programmes “Multidisciplinary Postgraduate Programme on Environmental Sciences - PMPCA“ (Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí, UASLP) and „Technology and Resources Management in the Tropics and Subtropics - TERMA“ (Cologne University of Applied Sciences, CUAS). Both programmes are offered at interdisciplinary units of the two prestigious universities.

Contents

The four-semester international master programme takes place in Mexico and Germany. It aims at preparing professionals in the field of environmental management and natural resources management. The graduates will be prepared to understand, analyse and assess complex environmental problems and to develop and evaluate solutions. these solutions are often related to the fields of urban or rural planning, more specifically to the water, land use or energy sector.
Next to basic knowledge regarding environmental sciences and resources management, each student has the option to shape her/his own profile by choosing among several specialized areas and modules (different choices at both study places – see further below for details). The successful graduates will have a high level of communication skills allowing them to discuss, present, and negotiate successfully. In addition, they will be equipped with intercultural communication skills, cultural knowledge related to the involved countries and a profound knowledge on international development cooperation institutions and projects. The content of the programme will be conveyed by employing diverse didactical methods like group work, problem based learning, and the incorporation of field visits. Furthermore, the acquisition of knowledge on relevant information and communication technologies will be an important asset of the graduate of this program.

The first two semesters will take place in San Luis Potosí, the third in Cologne, while the fourth will be reserved for the field research and elaboration of the master thesis, which may be related to a project in any country in Latin America. Teaching language will be Spanish in Mexico and English in Germany. During the whole period, web-based virtual tutoring will be available in order to provide a sound and consistent program supported by staff from both executing universities.
The course is structured through basic and specialized modules, and is accompanied by practical experiences, exercises, team projects and seminars throughout the programme. Each of the two partner universities has a different focus related to the following specialized areas:

UASLP, Mexico: * Prevention and Control,
* Environmental Assessment,
* Renewable Natural Resources,
* Environmental Management,
* Environmental and Health

CUAS, Germany: * Land Management,
* Integrated Water Resources Management
