The Postgraduate Certificate programme comprises of two modules that are credit rated. Each taught module offers 30 credits. On successful completion of two masters level modules of 30 credits each it is possible for the 60 credits to be incorporated into the MSc in Advanced Practice programme.

Foundations in Colposcopy

This module is designed to meet the BSCCP/RCOG requirements for colposcopy training and be the first stage of the educational/training process for new trainees working towards BSCCP accreditation. For new trainees, the module will develop both theoretical knowledge and understanding of colposcopy and clinical competence in diagnostic colposcopy through the educational process and clinical experience supervised by a clinical mentor (BSCCP recognised colposcopy trainer).

The module aims to facilitate the development of an advanced practitioner who has the necessary knowledge, skills and competence to perform safe diagnostic colposcopy in accordance with the BSCCP requirements for the delivery of an effective National Cervical Screening Programme. For the new trainee this will encompass the ability to apply a sound knowledge base including the principles of screening and bio science; utilise current evidence; demonstrate safe technical and practical skills in diagnostic colposcopy under direct supervision; apply proficient consultation skills and diagnostic reasoning skills in the holistic assessment of an individual and in the identification of their health needs in order to promote wellbeing. For BSCCP accredited colposcopists while competent in colposcopy, the module will aim to build on their existing knowledge and skills and seek to develop their lines of academic enquiry in diagnostic colposcopy for the enhancement of their academic profile.

Advances in Colposcopy

The module aims to prepare the colposcopist for the opportunities and challenges of autonomous diagnostic and therapeutic colposcopy practice. This module complements the Foundation in Colposcopy module and serves to extend knowledge, skills and competence in colposcopy practice to facilitate the management of more complex colposcopy case management.

For new trainees, the module will help to develop a deeper, wider knowledge of both colposcopy practice and complexities of colposcopy patient case management. The module will also provide the opportunity to complete colposcopy training, performing colposcopy under indirect supervision in readiness for independent practice. This module is designed to meet the BSCCP/RCOG requirements for colposcopy training and for therapeutic/treatment colposcopy.
