One of the major technological trends is to embed sensing, communication, computation and actuation in physical artefacts leading to the creation of smart
devices (phones, personal assistants, media players, hand-held games devices,
security, navigation systems, RFID, etc.).

Current industrial developments and academic research indicates that smart devices are becoming an integral part of our daily life with applications in economically important areas such as entertainment, retail, supply-chain management, asset management, safety critical situations in work places and healthcare. The smart device industry is one of the fastest growing technology markets. The success of smart devices is dependent on the services that they provide; and these services are engineered from software.
