Location of University of Amsterdam

The Erasmus Mundus Master's programme in International Performance Research features a European perspective and tradition while also developing a conceptual analysis of the global context.

The Erasmus Mundus Master's programme in International Performance Research (MAIPR) features a specifically European perspective and tradition while also developing a conceptual analysis of the global context in relation to performance creation and reception. Funded by the European Commission, the programme is offered jointly by three well-known academic institutions: the University of Warwick (UK), the University of Amsterdam and the University of Tampere in cooperation with the University of Helsinki (Finland).

Contents

Students study at either the University of Amsterdam or at the University of Warwick (UK) as their home university, and travel on mobility during the second semester to the other institution. The University of Tampere (Finland) hosts the annual summer school in Finland and also contributes to the taught programme. Both the University of Amsterdam and the University of Warwick offer their own courses. At each location, there are fieldwork/internship assignments with theatre companies, theatre and dance museums, archives, independent artists, curators, festivals and other relevant organisations and individuals. The programme also features course offerings by invited international guest scholars and practioners.

At the University of Amsterdam, students attend core courses on theatre and performance theories, a general introductory lecture series, as well as courses on theatre and globalisation, historiography and intercultural performance analysis. The thesis will be supervised by staff from both the UvA and the University of Warwick.

Programme outline

The Erasmus Mundus programme in International Performance Research yields 120 ECTS credits:

  • 42 credits for core courses
  • 30 credits for fieldwork/internship assignments
  • 18 credits for a thesis

The specific number of credits a student is required to obtain through coursework is determined by the admissions committee and is based on the student's previous qualifications.

Modalities of research

Students enrolled in this programme will be involved in three modalities of research: scholarship, curation and creative practice.

  • Scholarship: traditional archival-based research or performance analyses, with a final product usually comprising scholarly writing (essays, dissertations, case studies)
  • Curation: taken from visual arts practice, curation refers to a range of activities including management, design and documentation of exhibits, performances and other formal events. Work may involve, for example, website design, production documentation, gallery exhibit curation or performance prospectus development.
  • Creative practice: studio-based explorations in time and space of subjunctive (quasi-fictional or metaphorical) representations of reality. This may involve actual performances in university or public spaces, virtual performances on the web, workshops and rehearsal room explorations of topics or themes, or ethnographies of artistic practice.

The partner universities each have different areas of emphasis. Warwick leads in creative practice, Amsterdam in scholarship.

Thesis

The thesis reports on research carried out by the student under the supervision of two academic staff members involved in the programme. The subject of the thesis must be mutually agreed upon by the student and the academic adviser(s). The thesis will be supervised by staff from both Amsterdam and Warwick University.

Degree requirements

Upon successful completion of the programme, students will receive two Master of Arts (MA) degrees: one in Arts and Culture from the UvA, and the other in International Performance Research from the University of Warwick.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
