Location of University of Amsterdam
The University of Amsterdam's Musicology programme covers a wide range of topics, including music of the world, contemporary expressions of music, western classical music of all periods, cognition, cultural musicology, and pop and jazz. The focus is on intercultural music(ology).
Contents
Students can choose a specialisation within the master programme in Musicology by choosing courses in Western music (contemporary and/or historical), World music, Jazz, Intercultural musicology or music theory.
Programme outline
The programme yields 60 ECTS credits: three Master's courses of 10 credits each, one elective course of 10 credits and a Master's thesis of 20 credits.
The specific number of credits a student is required to obtain through coursework is determined by the admissions committee and is based on the student's previous qualifications. Fulfilment of all the requirements will take at least one year.
Core courses provide a theoretical background, while practical skills can be honed in training sessions at the Royal Tropical Institute, the Walter Maas Huis in Bilthoven (a location for all kinds of contemporary music practice) or the research institute of the Conservatory of Rotterdam.
Thesis
The Master's thesis reports on research carried out by the student under the supervision of two academic staff members involved in the programme. The subject of the thesis must be mutually agreed upon by the student and the academic adviser(s).
Degree requirements
Musicology is a track of the Dutch Master's programme in Muziekwetenschap (Musicology in Dutch). Students who succesfully complete this programme recieve a master's degree in Muziekwetenschap and the title Master of Arts (MA).
Credit transfer
Students who show exceptional promise during a Regular or Professional Master's programme are encouraged to continue their studies in a Research Master's programme. Once students are admitted to the Research Master's programme, they can transfer credits earned during their previous course of study towards their Research Master's degree. The examination committee determines which courses qualify for transfer.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Previous education: Applicants for the Master's programme should have at least a Bachelor's degree or its equivalent in musicology or another relevant field. The level of the Bachelor's degree must be comparable to that of a Dutch Bachelor's degree.
Written request: Students can apply from 1 December until 1 April by filling out the digital application form and uploading the necessary documents via the website of the Graduate School for Humanities.
