Embedded Systems is the most common form of computer systems, i.e. those that are built into machines, devices and power and manufacturing plants, and are consequently often not perceived as a computer system. Today, around 98% of all manufactured processors are used in embedded systems applications, from sewing machines to respirators, TV, power consumption measurement equipment and satellites. The common denominator for these embedded systems is high level demands for functionality and reliability. Embedded systems are often real-time systems in the sense that they closely interact with the surrounding world that they control.

The enormous price/performance development of electronics coupled with the flexibility and programmability that this technology brings, means that new products and new functionalities in existing products are increasing rapidly. This brings considerable opportunities for innovation, company development and new enterprises. The industry is, at the same time, experiencing severe problems with sustaining competence within the area and is also facing major challenges in managing the integration of software and hardware, in the definition of suitable system architecture and in the verification of products.

Career prospects
There is a continuous demand for good embedded systems engineers on the world job market. Potential employers of Embedded Systems Master program graduates are companies that design and develop electronic components and embedded systems in the telecom, automotive, automation, security, consumer electronics and a variety of other industries.

The programme has a broad industrial contact network through ICES – the KTH Innovative Centre for Embedded Systems. ICES member companies have taken an active part during the initiation period of the programme, and they intend to support implementation and student activities within the programme (eg trainee positions, MSc thesis projects, pilot projects etc).

Contents

The purpose of this Master's programme is to provide a broad education within Embedded Systems with the opportunity to specialise within the areas (Embedded Platforms, Embedded Software and Embedded Control) that cover theoretical as well as practical aspects of the development of products based on Embedded Systems. Special emphasis is placed on engineering skills, integration of software and hardware, system design, integration and verification and the management of the design process.

Degree project
The objective is for students to demonstrate their individual skills acquired during the programme and apply them to solving a realistic problem. The student writes a thesis report and presents, demonstrates and defends the results. The thesis project may be proposed by the student, an examiner, a company, a public agency or any other external organization. The project plan must be approved by the examiner of one of the thesis project courses in the curriculum.

The degree project may also be performed at universities or companies abroad.
