The field of communications has radically changed our lives and societies. Communication services that have become widely available only during the last ten years are now taken for granted: for example the Web and its search engines; Internet telephony and mobile datacom; peer-to-peer file sharing, podcasting, as well as audio and video streaming and social networking. Such services affect our daily lives, they provide choices for how and where to work, relax, play and socialize. The design of communication networks and services is therefore central to the future development of our societies.
The Master's programme in Network Services and Systems provides the competence needed to work in this dynamic, challenging and extremely interesting field of engineering. The programme provides in-depth knowledge of network systems and the services they provide, and prepares students to work at the forefront of research and development in these areas. Services include novel uses of communication in the health and medical field, in addition to network security and data and multimedia communication in wireless networks and the Internet. The skill-set includes analytic and simulation tools for evaluating the performance of systems, as well as a sharpened proficiency in programming.
Career prospects
The programme is well aligned with the needs globally of both manufacturers of network systems and providers of network services. There is a high demand world-wide for talented and well-prepared engineers at the Master's level in development and operations, and for researchers in both industry and academia for those who wish to continue towards a PhD degree.
Sweden has a prosperous industry in network services and systems with job opportunities and possibilities to start new businesses. We provide insights to career prospects by inviting guest lecturers from industry to speak in the courses.
The program starts with a block of four mandatory courses on internetworking, wireless networks, mathematical modeling and theory of science, to give a solid introduction. This block is followed by three tracks of conditionally elective courses, and courses that are freely elective. The three tracks are:
* Design, preparing for research carrier
* Technology, covering important present and future technologies
* Enterprise, on the application of networked systems and services in the industry.
The final block is a six-month long master's thesis project. The program is given on the KTH Campus. The academic advisors will support the students in their choice of courses and studies so that they achieve their full potential within the programme.
Degree project
The thesis project allows students to manifest their acquired mastery of the design of network services and systems. Many of the projects are part of ongoing research at the university, or perfomed at the industry, ususally related to research and development.
