The M. Sc. programme on Wireless Systems is a course based program taught in English, which focuses on enabling technologies for wireless systems. It provides a broad curriculum composed of courses on communication theory, radio communication, signal processing, multimedia processing and communication networks.
Career prospects
The program has the dual goal of providing a good background both for working in industry and for a continued academic career. This is reflected in the statistics from previous years, where every year some 35-50% of the graduated students from the program have continued with PhD studies, mostly within Sweden or Europe, but also some in America or Asia. Almost all remaining graduates work at R&D departments at major manufacturers and operators in the communications area, all over the world.
The programme is 2 years long (120 ECTS), and consists of 1½ years of full-time coursework (90 ECTS) and one semester degree project (30 ECTS). The programme begins with three compulsory courses covering the fundamentals of digital and radio communications. Following these courses students may specialise their studies into one of the following three profiles:
* Information Transmission and Processing (I)
* Wireless Networks (W)
* Multimedia Signal Processing (M)
Roughly a third of the course-work can be selected freely from a large selection of elective courses. In addition to the technical topics, one or two classes on non-technical subjects like project management, leadership or technical English, should be included in the degree. Included in the curriculum is the opportunity to follow some courses at the Ph D level.
Degree project
The Degree project amounts to one semester of full time work and is undertaken during the second year. Typically, the preceding summer is used to prepare for and specify the thesis project. The thesis project is carried out in the area defined by the courses taken during the first year of the programme. The project may be carried out either in industry, at a KTH department or in another technical university or research institute anywhere in the world.
