In today’s highly competitive and fast changing global market engineers need advanced knowledge and highly developed skills in how to create competitive and sustainable products in multidisciplinary teams.
Integrated Product Design (IPD) is a two year graduate programme, focusing on processes and methods for product development in order to create innovative, usable, competitive and sustainable products and services. The programme offers three specialisation tracks: Integrated Product Development (IPU) that focuses on the organisation, leadership and performance of product development processes in large teams, Industrial Design Engineering (IDE) that focuses on the functional design and communicative aspects of the product in relation to user and market, and Product Innovation (PI) that focuses on business development, marketing, and strategy.
The main objective of the programme is to enable students to become engineers skilled in creativity, design and development of products in complex and competitive surroundings. The programme offers competence in several related disciplines such as product innovation, eco-design, human-product interaction, service design, group dynamics, visualisation and communication of design proposals, and prototyping.
The courses are primarily based on project assignments carried out in groups of varying sizes. The projects are usually done in co-operation with a company or organisation that provides a real life task and setting. The IPD graduate programme is integrated with research projects at the Department of Machine Design and at KTH at large, which guarantees knowledge of up to date technology as well as future challenges and opportunities in product design.
The programme consists of a mixture of basic compulsory courses, optional courses and track specific courses. There are good opportunities to create your own mix of courses to match your interests and career plans. Depending on background and chosen track, adaption courses may be required. Finally there is a degree project corresponding to 30 ECTS credits.
Degree project
The thesis project is supervised by an experienced researcher and can be performed in an industrial setting or in an academic environment. Each student is encouraged to actively search for a suitable thesis project in industry, and KTH will provide some information on suitable points of contact. If you are an international student, we recommend that you find a thesis project in your country of permanent residence or in the country where you intend to start your professional career.
