The Master’s Programme in Applied and Engineering Mathematics (N5TeAM) provides students with the knowledge of how to apply mathematics and problem-solving in a wide range of fields. Students study at two universities, graduate with a double degree and gain all-round mathematical skills.
The N5TeAM joint curriculum has been developed to take advantage of the strengths and research specialisations of each member university.
The N5TeAM curriculum covers a broad range of engineering and theoretical topics providing students with a solid knowledge of the fundamentals of mathematics, and a wide range of focus and application areas. Subject areas include:
* Applied mathematical analysis
* Biocomputing
* Computational mechanics, geosciences, and geometric intergration
* Cryptology and coding theory
* Numerical analysis
* Partial differential equations
* Stochastics, computational and spatial statistics
Career prospects
All students who have successfully completed thir MScs in this programme may join the international research community by continuing on to PhD studies. These students may continue in applied or engineering mathematics, but graduates will also be excellent candidates for many PhD programmes in computational science fields. Graduates of this programme will also be qualified for demanding positions in industry, particularly in fields that require the use of mathematical models, optimisation and simulation. In many cases, MSc. thesis work will be carried out in the research units of companies or the public sector. Graduates of this programme have also gained valuable international experience from studying at two Nordic universities.
Students study their first academic year at one university and their second at a different university: Aalto University (School of Science) in Finland, Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden, Technical University of Denmark (DTU), the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden (KTH) or the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).
During the first year, instruction consists of theoretical courses that prepare students for specialisation in the second year. These studies include individual projects. After the first academic year, a common summer school is organised for all the students in the programme. During the second academic year, an MSc thesis project comprising 30 ECTS will be completed. This project is supervised jointly with the university where students have completed their first year of studies.
The language of instruction is English. Upon graduation, students will be awarded a degree from each of the two universities they attended, thus receiving a double degree. Information about the academic year at the different partner universities is available from their local websites.
Degree project
The MSc thesis comprises 30 ECTS credits and is carried out in the second half of the second year of the programme. Students are supervised and examined by faculty from both the home and the host universities. Thesis work may be performed in a research group at the relevant university or as a project in industry or at a consulting company. The result of this thesis work is provided as a written report and as a presentation at a seminar.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

A Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) of at least 180 ECTS. Specific requirements as specified by each Master’s programme.
Language requirements:
The applicants must have an excellent command of English and they must present an official language test report. The acceptable tests are TOEFL and IELTS. No other English proficiency tests are accepted.
When filling the online application form, the test date and the test scores have to be filled in, if they are already available. The results are valid for two years. The language test result has to be valid during the application period. That means that the test result has to be valid at least on the first day of the application period. Please note that the ETS does not send TOEFL test results after they have expired.
If the test result (total/writing) is lower than the minimum scores below, the application will not be be processed.
If the language test is taken after submitting the application package, please notify us by e-mail master-n5team@aalto.fi (send a copy of your result). Of course, with the TOEFL test, the official score report needs to be ordered from the ETS.
The language test report has to arrive at the admissions office by the language test deadline 1 March 2012.
TOEFL:
Paper-based: 580 (written section grade 4,5)
Internet-based test: 92 (written section grade 22)
When you take the TOEFL test, you need to order the official test report to be sent directly to Aalto University, reporting code 7364 as soon as the score is available. Only this official score report submitted by ETS is accepted. In addition, you can enclose a copy of the test result in your application if available.
IELTS:6.5, no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted).
When you take the IELTS, enclose a copy of the result to your application package. The IELTS test result can be verified officially by Aalto University at a service offered by the testing authorities.
