Environmental Management is an essential part of Environmental Engineering and concerns the interaction between human society and the environment. In order to meet the challenges of sustainable management of natural resources there is a need for cross cutting professionals who are able to combine in-depth knowledge on local and global environmental impact with expertise on strategies and tools aimed at reducing the total impact of human activities on nature and environment. This requires, among other skills, knowledge of models and methods for collecting and analysing environmental information, knowledge of the interdependencies between society and environmental problems and tools for changing human behavior, also planning practice aimed at reducing environmental impact.
Career prospects
Environmental technologies are experiencing very strong growth and form a megatrend in technological development. Their rapid growth is fuelled by innovation as companies develop new products to satisfy societal demands. The N5T universities are ideally positioned to offer the education and tools necessary for future engineers to take advantage of this Green megatrend.
The Environmental Engineering Nordic Master's programme is a joint, two-year master's programme offered by the Nordic Five Tech (N5T), an alliance between the leading Nordic technical universities. The programme offers four tracks in total, one of which is the KTH track Environmental Management which is supplied jointly with the Technical University of Denmark (DTU).
Since this programme results in a double degree, students should complete at least 60 ECTS coursework at KTH and DTU respectively. Students who apply to the master's programme in Environmental Engineering at KTH will start their first year of studies (60 ECTS) on the Environmental Management track at KTH and continue to DTU to complete their second year of studies (60 ECTS), including a 30 ECTS degree project. Another option it to start at DTU and complete the first year (60 ECTS), then continue the second year of studies at KTH (60 ECTS), including a 30 ECTS degree project. For this option students should apply to DTU.
Degree project
The degree project comprises 30 ECTS and provides students with the opportunity to investigate a problem in depth under the supervision of experienced practitioners and researchers. Students who start their studies on the Environmental Management track will conduct their Degree projects at DTU with a supervisor from DTU and a co-supervisor from KTH. Supervision from each of the two degree-awarding institutions involved in the programme ensures the integration of all programme components.
