The programme is Masters degree in business engineering with specialisation in Financial Engineering.

The programme uses a strongly quantitative approach, and aims to give students high-level competencies in the modeling of markets and financial instruments.
The objective is to teach students the methods and techniques required to participate actively in the creation, management and control of financial products and services with high levels of added scientific and technical value. The training is based on a thorough understanding of the concepts and frameworks and on the possibility of using them in new contexts.

This specialization is for students who are attracted to high profile jobs in the field of quantitative finance and are willing to constantly improve their knowledge through continuing education in the fields of mathematical finance and actuarial sciences.

Career opportunities

This specialization allows students to work, among other jobs, in quantitative departments of financial institutions, in the risk management functions, in technical departments of insurance companies, or in pension funds.

It also opens the way to getting positions involved with the structuring of financial products in trading rooms or asset management companies, including hedge funds.
The student graduation with this field of specialization will thus be prepared to seize opportunities in:

  • Activities of asset management companies (management of mutual funds / pension funds / hedge funds) related to portfolio structuring;
  • Jobs of complex risk modeling and management (liquidity, credit and operational risks; use and creation of derivative instruments) in the financial sector;
  • Activities in investment banking related to the preparation and execution of complex strategies regarding the origination, the evaluation and the exchange of financial instruments, including in the context of mergers and acquisitions (M&A)

Contents

A general core curriculum (55 ECTS)

The program is structured around a general core curriculum, allowing each student to acquire a solid foundation of knowledge in management-related subjects, a strong ability to model and formalize management problems, and well-developed critical thinking skills.

In addition to the general subjects, this core curriculum also comprises a transversal
activity: a seminar on Strategy and Corporate Social Responsibility (5 ECTS).
All these subjects are taught in English.

4 specializations (60 ECTS) are directly linked with our Peaks of Excellence and thus benefit from the School’s market-leading research, the associated international academic networks, and contributions from the School’s large partner companies (chairs, professorships...).

Students must take six subjects (30 ECTS), produce a (project-based) thesis (20
ECTS) and complete an internship in a company (10 ECTS). Both the thesis and
the internship are related to the chosen field of specialization. Students thus
accumulate 60 credits in the chosen major, which constitutes the highest
level of specialization in French speaking community of Belgium.

A Skills Portfolio (5 ECTS) completes your theoretical training by adding a soft skills
element. It gives you access to intensive workshops focusing on the acquisition of transversal
skills.

The Teaching Option

This includes the pedagogic training in preparation for senior secondary school teaching. Students who do not immediately choose the teaching option but who have completed another option and then decide to lean towards a teaching career, can re-sit just the 30 specific credits of the teaching option, without having to re-do a final assessment project.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
