The MSc in Computing Science degree is suitable for graduates of scientific disciplines other than computing preparing for a career in the computer industry. The typical entrant has an upper-second class or first class honours degree in a science or engineering discipline. Entrants to this degree would normally be required to do some preliminary study and practice in programming if they have had no such prior experience. The course can be a suitable foundation for a PhD degree.

The programme provides opportunities for postgraduate students to develop and demonstrate knowledge and understanding and practical skills in basic and specialised topics in computing, including Object Oriented Design and Programming, Software Engineering, Networks, Distributed Computing, Databases, Artificial Intelligence, Computational Finance, Bioinformatics and Robotics. Students are able to develop and demonstrate the qualities and skills needed for group co-operation as well as for literature search, technical presentation and report writing, and to join in development of a large software project.

Students take core courses in computer science in term one. These are examined by coursework, two written papers (taken in May) and a practical examination taken in January. In term two students select for examination four specialist options selected from about twelve courses on offer. These are examined by coursework, and by a written examination in May. Students may, of course, attend one or more additional courses not for examination if they wish. Students also complete a team programming project in term two with a presentation at the end of term. In the period from May to September students carry out their individual project.
