This is the first qualifying course in Dance Movement Psychotherapy in Scotland and the first MSc in the subject in the UK.
Dance Movement Psychotherapy (DMP) is a movement-based therapy in which the clienttherapist relationship plays a central role. DMP practitioners work with individuals and groups, predominantly in education, health, prisons, social services and other community-based settings (eg voluntary and private organisations). DMP is provided to a wide range of clients of all ages. It is a treatment modality for people who are emotionally distressed, who experience physical or mental illness, and for those with physical and/or cognitive impairment as well as people who seek personal growth.

Upon successful completion of the degree, Graduates can then work in a number of different settings including hospitals, schools, voluntary organisations, social work settings and prisons. They may also engage in private practice.
Teaching will take place in the form of lectures, seminars, workshops and experiential work. Student-centred learning and independent study is a key feature of this course. You will also go on two placements located in at least two contrasting settings. Placement providers include hospitals, schools, voluntary organisations, social work settings and prisons in various places in Scotland and North England. Where possible, placement agreements are arranged close to where students live. However in some cases some travelling may be required (and associated costs). All students are in placement for the duration of their studies (around 30 weeks) for either one or two days depending on whether they are studying part-time or full-time. There will be both summative and formative assessments that include written assignments, presentations and creative performance.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
More informationAn honours degree in relevant field of study or equivalent. You must also have: continuous experience of at least one dance or movement form for a period of two years and exposure to, and experience of, a variety of dance and movement forms; an ability to improvise with confidence, use movement creatively, expressively and symbolically as well as relate and communicate through movement in both dyadic and group interactions; and at least one years relevant practical work experience (voluntary or paid).
Applicants are expected to attend an interview and movement audition at QMU, Interviews will take place on set dates, normally between February and June. International applicants will be considered by submission of a DVD of their work and a telephone interview.
A satisfactory criminal records check will be required alongside a medical certificate that states that applicants are physically and psychologically fit to undertake their studies.

Successful graduates receive licence to practise as dance movement psychotherapists by the Association for Dance Movement Psychotherapy UK (ADMP UK).
